Try and use any board you can get your hands on.
I've found every board offers something different, and there is no "right" board, although it is easy to develop a favourite.

You could lean towards more volume to get your on the plane earlier, which also make it more forgiving, but it also makes it bouncy once you get up to speed, and won't turn as easy from trying to sink all that volume when carving hard.
A thin board will be fast and whippy, handle more wind, but maybe not so good when winds are light. But.... it will force you to refine your technique.
Wider boards offer different earlier planing, thinner boards more speed. Flatter boards for more speed, boards with more rocker for steeper waves...
As Ellobuddha says, then there's fin choices.
