Just a reminder to everyone kiting Brighton WA, keep away from swimmers best you can and try to stay north of the drain(even if the restrictions haven't officially started)

Yesterday was a prime day for why these restrictions are put in place, warm day with plenty of people on the beach, light wind & decent swell. Being the weekend there was plenty of people keen to kite.

I had a surf up the beach and could see that nearly everyone was struggling to keep the kite in the air.

It is days like this that we have to be extra careful not to stoke any anti-kite fires.

Hey Corey, shouldn't that be try to stay South of the drain?

I'm not really too sure though I am not a regular down that way, and haven't sussed the new restrictions yet.

Your right though its the warmer, light wind days, when beaches are packed and kiters are struggling to hold ground or keep their kites in the air that are the ones that cause grief.

yeah, south of the drain.

I was watching yesterday arvo for a while,,, there was a guy on a surfboard, green kite, not staying upwind, north of the drain, then almost straight through the flags. luckily he had the brains to pull off the swells before the broke... but geez, big beach, stay the hell away from the one spot with 200 swimmers in it.

Does anyone know if these areas will be signed? IMO, more important to let kiters know

Tightlines you would think that but although it has the potential to cause more interactions it is not based on any evidence because the incident that tipped the scales out of our favor occurred on a 25knot day with only a couple of swimmers in the water.

People not only need to avoid the exclusion zones , they need to steer clear of swimmers anywhere flags or not on the coast. Please do not ride through flagged areas on downwinders aswell.

As for the Exclusion Zone being just for swimmers, other people like to lay on the beach or walk or jogg along it and would prefer not to dodge kites and their strings. I think when you come to the beach just try to minimize your impact and more importantly the risk you impose on others and maybe yourself :-)

I spoke with one of the beach inspectors on Thursday and he said there will be very clear signage going up but the signage isn't ready so it is not up yet he also said they will not enforce the exclusion zone until it is.

But if you know about it better to stick to the Oct 1 date now and try and encourage all other kiters to do so too.
