I'd like to know more about her 'calculated risk'. I.e. is a 50% chance of being eaten acceptable? Incredible vid tho

Like circus tigers, that shark was in a drug-induced stupor (in addition to having just been fed two seals and half a walrus). While it remains dubious that they have a gentle side, they certainly have massive jaws with jagged teeth that are designed (and used) for killing anything that resembles food or an outboard engine. The videos that show the world the virtues of the great departed leader Kim Jong-il are hence more credible than this Joseph Goebbels-inspired eco-propaganda. If you want to "save"the oceans, start by not feeding your cat (aka "bird killer") cans of depleted ocean resources (i.e fish that are somehow deemed less worthy of life).

i can see that is a totally valid point

. . . . . . but (and i am no expert on the matter) if while im out kitsurfing a great white decides to introduce himself to me im pretty sure (in fact almost certain) that it won't be wanting me to grab onto his dorsal finn so we can gracefully glide around for a bit of fun

I love it. Let's kill heaps of other fish, feed the great white until it's full then swim with it to prove it's harmless and we should protect all living creatures.
On another note, did anyone attend the peaceful paddle for sharks in Perth the other week? If yes I was just wondering what the bbq tasted like after? A mate of mine went and said "come down, they have a free bbq at the end!" **** those hippies are stupid.

Pretty impressive. I particularly like how they got an expert opinion in these matters, to help give the story credibility:

"Sydney Sea Life Aquarium aquarist Amy Wilkes said that swimming with great white sharks was clearly a dangerous proposition."

Was that blonde hair I noticed?

It's like filming a fat guy walking past a Mcdonalds and claiming fat guys don't eat McDonalds.

If the dude is hungry you don't want to be Filet-o-Fish.

Great Whites are ruthless killers & predators that is their DNA but like most wild animal they only kill when they hungry and not for the pleasure of the kill. That woman took a calculated risk and she made great news, but could have quite easily turned into a "Siegfried and Roy" moment.

Sharks are apex predators and play a crucial role in keeping the balance of an ecosystem.

I think what she is advocating is the role sharks play in keeping our oceans filled with life. Kudos to her. That shark did look very docile.

How does something that eats large amounts of fish and marine mammals "fill the oceans with life"? Indeed, similar to industrial-scale fishing, large predatory sharks profoundly deplete "less awesome" forms of marine life.

If you put all the sharks in the ocean together they would not eat the amount of fish that humans pull out the ocean every year from industrial scale fishing, large predator sharks are such a small population overall they would not even register on the fish/mammal eating scale. The only thing that's getting depleted is the shark population from over fishing for there fins.

Shark numbers may be on the decline but definitely not great whites and tigers! They are healthier than ever and their population is continuing to grow :)

Its only thanks to modern technology that we'll see a lot more of them.

In fact great whites are an endangered species and there population is less than 3500 in total and declining, the fact is there are less Great Whites in world than Tigers (the four legged kind).

Thats exactly the problem. Its impossible to count them. There are hundreds of tagged great whites currently. Have we really tagged a quarter of the population?

I'm not denying they arent vunerable but the simple fact is that they have been protected for long enough now that they are reproducing. It might take them 15 years to reach sexual maturity but 6-10 pups growing a foot a year after that means positive signs and i believe thats happening.

A 3-4m tiger shark might only breed once every few years but when she does there might be 50+ of them

Do some research there is plenty of info on net from reliable sources before you start shooting off the BS rant. By the way can you give an accurate human world population down to the last person good luck with that one.
