I would appreciate any help. What are kitesurfing spots in Sydney area, as I want to live close to them. I currently live 10 min. from the beach. Is it true that the sharks are alwyas lurking about waiting to chomp on your leg? We see it on the news all the time over here with sharks and helocpoters. What is the average water temp. in the summer and winter? Our temp here (Pismo Beach, CA) is 16.5 C, and I wear a 4/3 neilpryde suite without ever getting cold We have great whites in San Fransisco/Bodega Bay, but they never get within 100 yards of the sand. Hey JBA,

I live in southern sydney and there are a few places to ride around here. Depending on what you want you have a few options. Brighton & Dolls Point are both spots with flatwater kiting and they're close to the city (15-20 minutes). Cronulla has waves, and is around 30-40 minutes from the city, and Kurnell is another flatwater spot about 10 minutes out from Cronulla. We have an oil refinery, power station, poo plant, tip, sandmining and we may soon have a desalination plant

. So we've got everything here out at Kurnell.

Water temp gets down to about 15C at its coldest in winter, and up to 22-23C in summer, with air temps around 15C in winter and 30-40C in summer. It's a nice place to live though. Ask anybody who lives in the Shire and they'll all agree it's a great place to live. Northern beaches look nice too but the traffic turns me off up there. It takes about 10 minutes to drive down the street. Plus I heard the guys up there don't shower either

Plenty of days around 12-25. My most used kites have been my 22, 18 & 12 (about 20-30 times each). I've used my 8 about 10-20 times last season, and used a smaller sized kite (4m-6.5m about 10 times this year). Wind usually blows 5-6 days a week in summer, when we get the seabreezes come through. HTH.

Watch out for the SHARKS in Botany Bay. Some are so big that they dont even need to chomp your leg they would rather just swallow you whole.
With the smaller sharks its not only legs that they chomp but they love coming into the shallows and chomping toes aswell.

Great, sounds like I will be doing skid rails on the back of the shark!! I don't want to sound like a knucklehead, by why don't you guys rig your boards with a protable shark shield. ocean-guardian.com/index.php Maybe I need to make a titanium bottom flx board? I am assuming the kiters there are a pretty good community of people, or is it generally a locals only crowd?

HEY JBA,
Arrow is just taking the piss (you will soon discover that means just joking/ messing with you) about the sharks. I haven't seen on in the bay and i have been kiting here for 4+ years. I am sure they are around but they don't appear to want any part of a kiter. At times there are so many kiters here that you would think if there are sharks, someone would have been sacrificed by now.
Good crew on botany bay though over the years it has grown so much that sometimes we get fools come down and try to get the sport banned by doing something stupid or ignorant. No locals only vibe apparently you have to go to West Oz for that (Just stirring WA crew). I haven't found any Locals only vibe if you know what you are doing and aren't going to be the twit that steels waves at Margaret river or screws up and potentially gets a place banned.
As far as where to live in sydney i would live closer to the south side since we get more wind than the northern beaches.

I couldn't resist any longer, someone had to stick up for the Northern Beaches of Sydney.

We have a few great beaches that work with the summertime seabreezes. Generally it is cross onshore port tack with 2-3 ft waves during summer. Most afternoons get around 15knts, I use a 16m and 10m with a 132cm twin tip or surfboard. Water is 19-24C over spring summer. Last year I was kiting regularly from late sept till march. Winter isn't very good for kiting, requires trips to the south side (Boat Harbour, seemed like only Longy kiters there on Sunday)or to the lakes further north, as most of the wind is off shore.

Have a look on a map for Long Reef, Collaroy, and Palm Beach. Even if you aren't confident in waves but are willing to give it a go you can improve quickly without getting too trashed. Lots of friendly locals around for sessions and downwinders. When a Southerly comes through we can get some overhead waves at Long Reef that are pretty exciting. We DON'T kite at Manly, Curl Curl or the Narrabeen lagoon, due to dangerous obstacles or overcrowding.

The way to avoid any traffic is to live on the "North Side", Manly is a popular choice, a 30min ferry away from downtown sydney, and 15 mins from Long Reef.

Hey Gav, if I'm a member of AKSA them I'm a member of NSWKBA right?

Are you guys keen to hold a couple of muck around comps this coming season? What would be involved in that? I can help out a bit if you need a hand organising something like that. I wanted to do something along the lines of a cruise comp, wave comp, freestyle (wakestyle, sliders/kickers) and race (around botany bay kurnell to brighton to dolls to Kurnell).

Any possibility of holding something like this that you know of?

Seems Gav does love his Northern beaches and sorry Gav if you took offence to me saying we get more kiteable wind than the northern beaches. There is plenty of good spots on the northside and there tends to be better wave spots on the north side with more reefs. Saying that, there has been many times that the breeze comes through an essential 3 knots stronger through the bay which means we can get out especially with an opposing tide. We also tend to get out for longer- before and after it is good up north. There has been many times i have been out on the bay and had a chat with my friends from Brookvale the same night and they are stunned that i was out kiting.
OF coarse these are broad generalizations and will probably be the opposite this coming summer. There is plenty of north side vs southside animosity as you may gather but anyway both are good -come find out for yourself.

Jees Jeff,

"Ugly" is a bit strong and even politically incorrect term. Perhaps you could say "attractively challenged" or "Handsomely left short".

Heya Daz,
Sam and i are good, how are you three? I assume you are both still consumed by the 'i can't beleive we created this' factor though i bet now you are really looking for some decent sleep.
just out for a dolls point session on the skim riding the bay swell/shorey. I had to double bag it though, so i didn't freeze (Spring suit and steamer). It was good to get out, Tried a new kite but most people wouldn't want to hear about it. Only had an 11 in less then 11 knots so after a while doing shore break runs on the wet sand i put up the 17 and had a bit more success with a more suitable size (though still way under powered as the wind dropped).

With winter rapidly approaching be prepared to possibly need to do some driving to kite.

For now thought, both Dolls(southside) and the beaches northside offer different things dependant on what you want to get out of your session. Personally I go south for more flat water sessions (with a bit more wind), and north if I want to give the surf a go.

Everyone is friendly so you'll have no problem hooking up with a group!
