Hi guys,

So I moved to OZ 4 years ago and have lived in Perth ever since.
I started kitesurfing last year and love it and will most likely never give up on it.

As much as I love Perth and the wind that it get's, work-wise, Perth only offers jobs in the mines, oil and gas and sales sectors. Back home in Amsterdam I studied Advertising and Design and here in Perth there is just absolutely no work in that sector as most of it is done from Sydney and Melbourne.

Which is making me think about moving over east. There is only one major factor that is keeping me from doing that and that is (you've guessed it) WIND!

Exactly how are the conditions over there? Is sacrificing all this glorious wind for a more enjoyable job a good idea?

Melbourne is horrible for kitesurfing. dirty water, sea urchines, no wind if any its gusty.
Really horrible place to KS. Sydney is fantastic, 25 kn every arvo with not many crowded beaches

Please don't act as if you don't have any space over there Try Safety bay WA mate then you'll learn what busy waters are.

Actually, tongue out of cheek, this summer has to be one of the best ever for Melbourne, we have been getting 4 - 5 days a week of 18 knots plus and for the life of me I can't understand why it is not busier. My regular is Brighton and a busy day would be 15 kites!

lol.....Really? Sydney 25 knots every arvo? Where is that? Lucky if you get 3 days out of 7, 15 knots and that is only around Botany Bay. Northern Beaches has Jack Shnit Wind.

Think you missed a subtle bit of sarcasm / inter city rivalry mike....

Looks like sarcasm hasnt quite made it up north and out west.

Id swap my life for yours in an instant, just look at your wind forecast and have a good hard look at your self!

Actually, I think you'll find AKWA's PROFESSION is advertising. And if you want to PRACTICE your profession, and enjoy your kitesurfing interest, I reckon the place to come to is Melbourne. Most of the agencies are located on St Kilda Rd or South Melbourne, so you are working within a 10 minute tram ride to St Kilda - OK it gets busy but at least you can get a full day in and enjoy a hour or two of kitesurfing after work. We have daylight savings and the sun sets at 9pm midsummer, so plenty of time even if you get to the beach at 630 -7pm.

AKWA, if you need a couple of contacts in the industry here, I have a couple of friends who work in advertising - PM me and I'll pass on their details.

Profession/Trade - same thing. I will have to get the new copy of Microsoft Word that all the graduates have with the thesaurus built in, my bad.

Stay in Perth.

If you can't compete, joint them. Get fly in/out work and you'll be making much bigger bucks.

Mind you tho, there is wind in Holland too:) Awesome conditions up north. And so short flight to Tenerife or Greece. Lived in Adam:) Loved it.

I'm actually Permanent Resident and have been here for 4.5 years. Wouldnt really consider myself the stereotypical travelling 'euro' anymore but alright I'll take one for the team.

Well I didn't study for 4 years just to do something that I don't enjoy. I worked at advertising agencies back in Amsterdam for a few years and as soon as I came here I was on a working holiday visa so no chance on a decent job. Then I finally got PR and now I'm finding that there is no chance of getting back in the industry that I like here.

Why study for 4 years, work in the industry for a couple of years and then do a job you hate for the remainder of your life..? I chose advertising for a reason... But believe me there is no advertising industry in Perth

I disagree. Work can be fun or at least enjoyable. Otherwise life would be miserable.

They paid me for it in Holland and they pay people for it in Melbourne and Sydney.

Perth is just focused on the engineering sector. In effect Perth is just one huge mining town, which is fine and understandable however it is just not for me.

Where do you think all the media around you comes from? Someone has to design all the logo's, websites, tv-adds, business cards, photography, magazines, shops, add campaigns etc etc. It doesnt just come out of someones a$$? There is jobs out there in advertising and it is sought after because otherwise companies would never get their name out there. However as I said before it is just not done here in Perth.

I suppose, overall, creative jobs are more highly regarded in Europe than they are over here but at least Melbourne and Sydney seem to still pay some interest in creativity.

Creative work IS fun. Repetitive work is not. On all interviews I was asked if I'm having fun...
