ok guys- an age old question i know, but i'm looking for some informed opinions:

i'm from queensland, and have the choice of moving to either syd or melb for a job next yr...

If you had to work in either city centre (and obviously live quite close to it), which city would you prefer in terms of kiting?

Factors to consider:
-distance of quality kiting beaches from city
-better conditions for kiting
-(do ppl kite in melb in winter??)
-has anyone worked and kited in both to compare?

cheers

Go to Sydney; Melbourne is too crowded already!

All these wonderful spots so closed to the city, half an hour or less to cover every southerly, and less than an hour to cover northerlies... you'd hate it! Not to mention Torquay, Sandy Point, Inverloch, and the whole Southwest coast. You'd be nuts to come down here; we all hate it!

gotcha... yeh i kind of knew melbourne was sweet for kiting- but how much of the yr can you actually kite there?
is it too cold over winter or is it just that im used to qld 25degree water?

for syd kiters: are there many good spots close to city?
how far do you travel for a good beach...?

Don't worry about the coldness of the water. I kindof enjoy it. Get the whole beach to yourself!

Probably the closest kitespot to the city in Sydney would be Dolls Pt. Dolls Pt is crowded, is affected by the tidal flow and has fleets of sailboats cruising through it on weekends. Its not ideal but it still beats the hell out of sitting at home watching the telly.

Check out www.nswkba.com.au Its got maps of all spots in and around Sydney and NSW.

-Brighton Le Sands is the closest to the city. Less affected by the tidal flow. It would take you about 20 mins from Bondi Junction to Brighton. Another 5mins to get to Dolls Pt. +20mins to Wanda,+25mins to Boat Harbour/Kurnell. There is also the Northern beaches great for wave riding.

As long as your safe and considerate Dolls Pt is fine, just listen to the locals advice. Pretty friendly bunch also.

Riding in winter is fine with a steamer. Coldest water I have kited in is 17-18 degs last July. Its not unbearably cold in my opinion just chilly.

From Sydney you can also travel 1.5-2hrs north to Central Coast or Newcastle. Aswell as 1hr south to Wollongong

I have never kited in Mebourne, I hear it is great! Although I've heard the water is much colder in winter, 12-15 degs.

I used to live in Bondi beach area, It sucks transport wise(traffic is a killer). The Junction is easier to get in and out of but living near the beach was a real hassle when catching public transport or driving in an out on a weekend.

All the best in your decision. Hope this helps PM if you have any other Q's

Dude melbourne for sure i have just moved here from sydney and it is so much better for kiting the wind in sydney is ****ed up and the girls are alot more pricy. St Kilda is a pretty dirty spot but it still beats anywhere in sydney becoz u can actually ride here 5 days a week wheras in sydney/central coast i was gettin like 1 day a week
