I'd not be riding along 'quite happily', I'd be very very wary. Avoid riding near other kiters/in crowded places or you'll end up:

"Poisened in the bushes, blown out on the trail
Hunted like a crocodile, ravaged in the corn..."

I have seen this happen, at the SAKSA state titles on the weekend. One rider was standing on the beach ready to land his kite after the final heat(only 2 kites in the air) and on the water, second kiter wasn't paying attention and completely tangled the two kites. The rider that caused the tangle immediately ditched his kite before the guy on the beach knew what had happened and was dragged up the beach on 2 kites managed to get draged through one kite while the other continued to loop. Bunch on officials jumped on the rider and more headed for the kite. Happened that fast QR and line knife were useless. Rider was lucky to get out of it with just his knee badly damaged not sure how bad.

Hitting your safety is not the safest way to deal with the situation (as one of the above posts demonstrates ). Releasing your safety just ends up with one lkiter being dragged by two looping kites ( sure if they are already looping and you are getting dragged... punch out but 9 times out of ten it occurs because one kite has flown through the others lines ... With a calm approach you will find most o the time you can still fly the kite to the waters surface with a degree of control it's important to communicate with the other tangled and attempt to put both kites at opposite ends of the wind window. ... Ie one out to the left one to the right until their wingtips are on the water by this time the two riders should be quite close together at which point it is possible to either swim through the other kiters lines to untangle or unhook and pass your bar through.

Every situation is different and you need to use your own common sense as to what is the best plan of action. If they are well tangled and you are going to release make sure the other kiter knows and has the opportunity to do so as well.
