I'll Start the thread by saying the launching and landing of kites is where most of the danger seems to lye, also the deathloop.

Performance innovation of the kites seems to have slowed and I've seen a diversity into different riding styles.

Regardless safety should at the forefront of development.

I think that all kites by law internationally should come with a self launch / land system, in the bag with the kite. then we would see kiters using self launch/ land tools on the beach in a everyday fashion.

Like this one pictured, but maybe in polycarbon, light weight, even 2 piece.

It's a nice tool, and if your going out alone in 40-50 knots it's a great innovation.
but your take on it is ridiculous
and generally speaking, it's mostly a waste of time and a nuisance

This is the quickest way to slice open your leading edge.
Great when the wind is strong...but soon as it shifts so does the kite and the LE gets dragged across the tip of the screw.

So your going to de clip from that monstrosity. And clip into your harness @ 30 knots.


You're then going to unwind the monstrosity with one hand while holding a kite.

Then walk it over to your gear so normal people don't have a death stick in there launching and landing zone.

Where can I buy one?

Having one of these won't stop people from launching or landing close to the foreshore.
Where the terrain makes it impossible to launch away from the foreshore, this launch/land system won't be able to be used anyways.

Just don't place the self launcher too close to an object.

I've seen it working fine and if you not plant it in the middle of the beach I'm OK with it.
Probably put something "flouro" onto it so it can be seen.
Personally I don't like it but this is my choice.

International law is plain b........!

If that was the case then how does the second kitesurfing person launch to provide the first person to be not alone....an so on..etc. never works mate.

I've noticed heaps of WA crew tether launch off their 4x4's and poles. Don't they teach proper self launch and land practices in the West?

I don't have anything constructive to add but I can see that thing getting ripped out and causing more issues when the winds up if not put all the way in like that image.

I don't use that tether (i regularly use a much smaller one that goes all the way into the sand) and it's yet to come loose tethering a 12m kite in 20-25knots. I'll take the risk on an uncrowded, wide and flat beach over self launching or landing around cuttlefish, sharp sticks etc.

Once the kite is in position and sitting nicely, it takes all of 6-8 seconds to run up the lines and clip onto the safety before hooking in.
