Why not make the most of these southerlies and have a big downwinder from say Rye to St. Kilda, $30 registration fee per kiter goes towards bus transport down to Rye, support craft on the water, barbeque on the beach and 6 iced tinnies per man to wash it all down? ( bacardi breezers or ruskies for the fairer sex )

A Sunday might be good, maybe 5th or 12th of Feb. Probably need 50 kiters at least, make it worthwhile. Maybe AKSA membership must be compulsory for insurance purposes, this could double as a great AKSA membership drive. Any thoughts AKSA guys?

Could have fun with this- prizes awarded for:

-Most ridiculous outfit
-Biggest danger on the water
-First to suffer major equipment failure etc etc

How many people think this is a viable exercise?

i like the first so suffer equipment failure, thats a winner! please have this award.

and maybe u'll have to cap the numbers so that there arent too many kiters in the same spot, safety reasons, or a staggered start, like the syd-hob yacht race, where the slower ppl start behind the fast fleet.

i rekon its a good idea and would be up for it myself, even if i pull in at home instead of going all the way to st kilda, roll up kite and walk home

anyways, make it a few weeks away so ppl can arrange to have family/friends to pick them up, as i think a massive session, then 6 tinnies and it wouldnt be too safe to drive home, not with all the booze busses.

catch yas..

I'm likely candidate for equipment failure

Sounds like a plan is coming together... would be an awsome sight, 10-20 odd kites running up the bay, definitely worth media coverage... or a home movie at least

I'm in too.

Who's gonna organise a support boat, plot the course, hire the bus, and chill the tinnies?????? (...and make sure the wind is turned on.)

Anyone up for it can email me ( John ) at: [email protected]

Lets see how we go with numbers, doppelganger thanks for the boat offer, if we can get at least 12 or 15 kiters we could get together to plan the ride. Would probably need to stop at least once for toilet break, drinks, etc.

Sounds great

How good would you have to be to participate in this? And how long do you think it would take to get from A to B?

With some good advertising I think there could easliy be 20-30 people interested

I hope that Boat is big.

Early in the season I down winded from Elwood to St kilda which took a decent amount of time.

But I was sticking in the breaks for some surf-action.
Has anyone an idea on travell time?

Also a staggered start means spreading support thinner, so running in a group and keeping stragglers and tearaways under control would be a good idea.

The time to kite from Rye to St. Kilda would greatly depend on wind direction. A south-westerly would allow us to point the nose of our boards straight at St. Kida pier! Sunday before last I kited from Hampton to St.Kilda, took me 35 minutes. A straight course would be the fastest option, any way you look at it you'd be knackered at the end of it.

I see this as more of a social ride, keeping together especially if some distance from the shore is a much safer option.

Sponsorship could be another possibility, help to cover the cost of support craft, your name on the evening news etc

Ok rough calcs:

Hampton to St Kilda approx 6km - 35 min
Rye to St Kilda approx 60km(reasonably direct) - 6 hours

thats a bloody long ride - a 2 to 4 hour ride would be more reasonable. maybe starting closer to melbourne, are there any suitable launches within 30km?

I reckon we make it this w/e. Think of 100 kiters rocking up to St Kilda in the middle of the nationals. That would make the judging interesting.

hmmmnnn... sounds like a plan. We might have to shift the launch site to Woodend though, maybe Sunbury; Woodend could be a bit far. (What arrows?!?!? Pointing which way?!?!?!?) DOH!

what about riding from Frankston? or even starting with a shorter downwinder this weekend, followed by a longer one in the future, just to suss out logistics?

Frankston could be a good idea, by my very rough calcs that should be about 40km or about 4 hours.

Knowing how tired I am after a 4 hours session, I would probably be more keen for this distance for my first downwinder. Also we would probably be a little closer to the shore the whole way from frankston and since I am a wimp I like this better too

I'd prefer to drown where people can see me too

But, seriously, doesn't this w/e look a bit windless for an epic downwinder?? I'm all for pumping up my 20m, but I doubt many others would be; most around the bay don't have anything quite that big (AFAIK).

QUOTE BOM.GOV.AU
"
Friday
Northerly wind freshening to 20 to 25 knots during the morning, then easing to
around 10 to 15 knots during the afternoon. Local seabreezes to around 10 knots
developing later.

Saturday
Northerly wind at 10 to 15 knots and afternoon seabreezes at similar strength.
"

Looks even worser for Sunday.

Ok thinking now 4hours for 40km is probably not right I was basing it on 6km for 35 minutes but that would mean we were only going at 10km an hour or 5knots which is pretty slow I would have thought an average of atleast 10knots was possible which would take it down to 2 hours from Frankston - What do you guys think?

sounds good - and would take us much closer to the shore than a direct path from rye

Perhaps we can warm up with a shorter blast and maybe start somewhere in the middle.
If its northerly and we launched at Sandy or Brighton we could head to Frangas or if going well Rye and if it's southerly lets leave from Mordy and head to Sandridge just north of Port Melb.
Both are decent rides, not too far and good for teething.

Frankly I don't think I'm up for 4 hours but I expect you'd have to get along at 10-15 knots easy.

Hell I'm up for some car pooling and a drop off just to get something happening, 4 or 5 of us in my landrover and then back down to pick it up later, just like the good old days(before my time)but I have it on good authority that that is the way it used to be.
I've been looking longingly at the Spirit of Tas from St Kilda Marina lately..and thinking....go Johnny .. .just keep going.

Who wants to go upwind anyway?
It's just going over the same old ground.

possible short trips (vice versa pending wind direction):

Aspendale to Frankston (shallow beach run)
Sorento to Safety Beach (mostly flat water in northerlies)
Frankston to Mt Martha (around the big headland of mt eliza/mornington area)
and so on, i dont know the upper half of the bay too well so i'll leave that to others. just some ideas tho. i think rye to st kilda is a little hardcore in distance, but there's always someone who could do it and make it look easy.

anyways, i like the idea, so keep up the thinkin!

How about a 2 stage trip where we do a morning trip and then an afternoon trip.

I'm not sure how my knees would cope with hrs of the same tack.

A shorter suss-out trip is a great idea. Lets aim for this Sunday and go with the northerly(if there is one)

I'm all for Brighton to Mordy, short and sweet, and on to Frankston for those that want it.

Hey doppleganger is that boat still on offer?
All participants would contribute to support craft costs, which could carry drinking water- or lash a canteen to your harness.

And arrange for your girlfriends/wives to pick you up
