Firstly I must prelude by saying deepest condolences for anyone that has been attacked by a shark or know someone that has, very unlucky.

The beat up of shark sighting in the media is starting to annoy me, it is playing on peoples fear. It sells. So they spend all this extra money with planes and boats etc. scoping out the water, and guess what they find. Sharks live in the ocean, shock suprise that there are shark sightings in there.

You don't hear about it in the winter time (not general public beach weather), when the temperature starts rising the stories start popping up on the radio, on the news in the papers.

I don't need to say how unlucky you would need to be to be taken by a shark by quoting some random statistic. How many attacks do you hear about worldwide per year? I guess it is just the fear of a seemingly random animal attack that could end your life that in a way fascinates people.

Just seems to me that the media is going a bit overboard in an attempt to sell a few papers and the fear they are spreading is generally not rational. Some people wouldn't go in the water after the recent attack in rockingham, yet people still continue to smoke and eat themselves to death even though all the information is out there. I mean on the smoking packet it tells you, 'smoking kills'. How much more blatant does it need to be. Anyway rant over, point is people are extremely poor judges of risk.

I guess theres one solution, tune out.

i agree with ya monkey. but it was a pretty horrible story today. my thoughts go out to the family of the victim

I was teaching in safety bay we had to can the lessons because the fesa guys said they spotted a shark of pengiun island. so be thought it was better to be safe than sorry.
But i agree there are probably always sharks around and shark attacks are incredibly rare and deaths even rarer. I remember hearing one statistic as your more likely to be killed by a falling fridge or soda machine then killed by a shark.. i don't know if that's true but it wouldn't surprise me.

but on the otherside you can see why people are scared. i personally can think of nothing scarier than being attacked by a shark even though i know the chances are incredibly low i do feel a bit like bait when im body dragging back to my board.

where do we sign for the petition?

I fully agree with you.

However, if there is an article in the newspaper talking about it, I would read it by curiosity, not you?

I have never seen a dangerous shark close to me in the wild, and in a way it is good to know that some have been spoted next to the spots we go to, it reminds us they live in these waters, and it teaches us the reflex that if we ever see a great white wondering around it is recomended not to go too close to it.

Of course, the flip side is that people do not bother to get more information about sharks, and if you say to someone you saw a shark, they will immediatly think about a great white or other dangerous ones... while in reality only a fews species can be dangerous, it is a real shame. I guess we all need to have something to "hate", so we can love.

A very very interesting documentary about sharks: sharkwater by Rob Stewart. This Canadian guy is in love for these animals since little, and his documentary is really shocking. Here is the link to the trailer:

A very sad story, and my thoughts go out to the family.
Its highly unlikly to be taken by a shark, the chances are the same as winning lotto three times in a row. and we are not the victims, the sharks are. Loss of habitat, hunted down for fins, decline of natural food sources etc.
At the same time we have a shark now that has learnt that you can eat humans, and it will be back for more, next year, same spot

i disagree with that mate. Watch the doco that jaques posted. Humans are not on a sharks food group 99% of cases we are simply mistaken for something that is there food such as a seal. thats why usually shark attacks are 1 bite, because when they bite they realize that its not what they thought it was and dont continue.. I think it very very rarely happens that a person gets eaten by a shark. I guess we can thank the media agian for that

I also agree with h20fly there is no evidence to support your claim RayQ, there are no real concrete examples of serial shark attacks on humans made by the same shark.

Was the human mistaken for another prey or maybe attracted to the area by fishing boats?

What can one do to reduce the risk of being attacked by a shark?

Some tips:

* Avoid swimming at dusk.
* Don't swim with bleeding wounds.
* Avoid murky water.
* Don't wear bright jewelry or high contrasting colors.(Kiteboarders!)
* Refrain from excessive splashing. ( Kiteboarders!!!)
* Don't swim if sharks are known to be present.- Thy are always present
* Be alert if turtles and fish are fleeing the area- Turtles flee with Kiters around

I agree with H2Ofly re the unease body dragging if you know that sharks are around..

We got croc mating time up here atm.
One of our local Kiters has seen a croc kiting last week(only small 1.5m one). Took a foto.

Then the Stingers..

I guess the only way to reduce risks is to educate ourselves and lower the risks through that.

I'm sure we all agree to some extent about what is being said. Bottom line though is they are always there. They would have seen each of us 100 times over without us even knowing it. As for doing things to avoid it, seriously. There is very little that can be done. Too many myths with very little basis. I haven't heard the avoiding murky water one by the way, not sure what difference that could possibly make. The clear water over here seems to attract 4 to 5 metre great whites without too much trouble.

As for the one bite only comment. h20fly I think you're right for some of the attacks but I can think of 3 in South Aus alone within the last 5 years where it wasn't content with just the one bite. All three were completely taken without a trace but witnessed by others so no mistaking that it was in fact a shark attack.

Bottom line I guess is if they freak you out that much stay out of the water. Otherwise accept it's a possibility, albeit a remote one and enjoy your kiting.

Hi All,

SHark attacks are one of man's most primitive fears and is played on by the media to sell advertisements to you.

As an active spearfisherman and member of a very active spear fishing club, I can tell you I have never seen a Shark in Perth Metro waters, and I dive from Woodies to Alkimos and out to Rotto and everywhere in between.

I can tell you there are no dangerous sharks in the waters we kite in 99.9% of the time. Occassionally a white will swim through chasing whales or seals or whatever, or maybe it's sick, whatever but this is the exception to the rule.

GWS will eat almost anything but it is true we aren't on their main diet (thankfully!). A couple of the older spearos in the club have come across them in the water and the shark has been interested but not aggressive to the divers. One diver Barry Paxmen has been diving Perth waters for 50 years and has encountered GWS only twice. Once in Cervantes and once off Rotto. Odds are so remote of an attack.

The reason you stay out of murky water and twilight is sharks visibility, they home in on vibrations and smell long before they can see their prey. Most attacks are a case of mistaken identity. Best bet is don't splash around like a wounded fish, this is what brings sharks, not blood, not urine. They may follow the scent but it's the vibrations that send them into attack mode.

We chum and burley the waters when shooting for Mackeral and if there were a shark within miles, they would hone in on the slick and the fighting fish. Perth Metro area has been fished out, and this includes sharks, quite sad really.

Kite on, and sympathy to the mans boy That sux!

My only fear in life is going out clubbing with the misses. I've seen stabbings, fights, I've had these 3 pumped on steroids and probably coke guys start hitting me from behind. I've seen people been hit by cars... I won’t even go into what I’ve seen on Fox8 and the History channel.

Sharks, I've relished every encounter. Beautiful creatures who we as "humans" murder by the millions every year.
Just remember just like humans some aren’t too smart and curious, and since they lack hands the only thing they can use to investigate is there mouth. But if you look at them and stay calm they get the picture... sure not too easy if you don’t know they’re there.

According to the Australian Institute of Marine Science, there are 10 fatal shark attacks worldwide per year. Humans kill an estimated 20-100 million sharks. I know which side I'd rather be on.

Ahh the good old trolling days ;)

I'm not a big shark lover though, I just am sick of the media circus about it. The risk is minimal and everything in life involves some sort of risk. Must admit would be nice to elimate that irrational thought from the back of your head though.

How these people can call themselves journalists I will never know.

Yeah I believe there are plenty of sharks in our Perth waters. I dive Rotto quite often and over the years I have had a 1.8m Whaler circle us, a 2.5m Whaler come right up to my face and have a look at me and then swim off. Once diving with my wife I was on the bottom about 15m down (what a great dive buddy I am) and my wife just rolled off the boat and I watched a shark attracted by the splash swim right up behind her. Luckily she didn’t see it.

I have also motored over the top of a 1,5m Hammer Head on the way to Rotto. Beautiful sight.

I am sure Darren doesn’t think they don’t exist just because he hasn’t been fortunate enough to come across one. But I wouldn’t want to come across a Great White!

Deepest sympathy to that Port Kennedy man’s family and friends.

Thought about going somewhere else?? Maybe change suburb/area/scene? I work at night in those areas/in that scene and I don't see much. Having that said, it's always there, there's always a risk but you don't think about it and it won't stop me from working and/or going out. Just as I won't stop kiting/going to the ocean because I hear about shark sightings. BUT, I I won't go out swimming for 2 hours at dusk, in a place where there's known to be sharks.

Assess the risk and make a decision. Is it worth going out? Sure! Am I gonna have fun with my friends, maybe meet some cool people? Highly likely! Am I gonna get into a fight or get bashed by someone? Not very likely to happen. Same with kiting/swimming and sharks..

I've left a board to float out because of these reasons I just mentioned. It's not very likely to be attacked by a shark, but the risk was there, the sun was setting, it was a fairly long swim (bare in mind I would EASILY have jumped out and swum out to it if I was in "safe" waters, even though it might have taken me 45 minutes) and I was not willing to take that chance.. My life is way more precious than a board.

"authorities say the rescue helicopter which was searching for missing shark victim Brian Guest near Rockingham spotted the shark this morning about 200 metres off the shore at Cottesloe".

"Swimmers at beaches between Cottesloe and South Beach have been cleared from the water as a precaution"

Why dont they just tag and monitor these sharks????

Yes...just as the fears of tigers, lions, etc....even whales (see Moby Dick) were in the past. All those species have been slaughtered to near extinction by now. Sharks are the next.
I clearly see the $$$,$$$,$$$,$$$ interest behind these media stimulated fear campaigns. Media have become the puppet in the hands of some blindfolded billionaires to whom everything on the planet starts with a $ sign. But they need those hundreds of millions who buy into the game of the media allowing themselves emotionally manipulated......

We all must 'RESPECT' the fact that sharks are always the Predator and they dont set thier wristwatch for feeding times. Call it mistaken identity or just curiosity...

Sharks "Dont" bite or eat people on dryland.

We choose to enter the water with predators that are always in it

seen or un-seen, rivers included.

It is their Habitat & will never be ours !!!

Some good point from several people re: avoiding attack.

Couple of things though.

First: Great Whites (can be over 7m and 2000kg) do not eat nearly anything. There food sources change as they grow. Smaller Whites eat stingrays, fish etc, as they grow their focus changes to larger prey such as turtles and more often dolphins, seals and other sharks.

If you read accounts from great white attack survivors almost every single one did not see it before they were in its mouth. If you keep your eyes open (not always possible especially when the water is dirty which is not what whites like anyway) and spot them they almost never attack. Some how they know they have been seen and are very cautious.

Great Whites are ambush predators that love deep gutter along beaches and around out crops. Here they can cruise close to the bottom and see the silhouette of prey above with there own counter shading making very hard to see them below.
Once ready they go for the prey as hard and fast as they can and hit like a truck. This is to injure/disable the prey and make it safer to feed on. In this process they find out exactly what there prey is and often if its not what they were after its left alone (obviously this is there "normal" modis operandi and nto always what happens).

2nd: Tigers and Bull Sharks.

These guys are bad. A big Tiger (and they do get well over 5M and 1500kg) WILL eat ANYTHING. they have been found with number plates, rain coats, deer, humans big turtles and a multitude of other items in their stomachs that would not always be considered normal food for a shark, on top of this they are quite fearless compared to whites and will attack anytime and will chase you to the point off beaching themself (very shallow water).

Bulls are probably the worst. They do get big although nowhere near the size of tiger or whites. The real danger with these guys if they love many of the places we swim (river mouths, cannals, creeks) and are also quite fearless. they can live in fresh water hundreds of kms from the ocean and as the water is often dirty they bite just to find out what you are. They often attach in groups and even when they know you are not a fish they will eat you anyway.

Last! Stats: Its all well and good to quote stats saying your more likely to get killed by lightening but put it in context. In you constantly play golf or stay out on your pole board (or kite probably) in an electical storm sooner or later you WILL get hit. If you swim in the same spot for 18 years at the same time you WILL run into a shark. Its RELATIVE EXPOSURE, we as water people are far more likely to encounter sharks, sting rays, stone fish, jelly fish then anyone else and the more you are out there the more likely it is you will have trouble at some time.

I have been surfin since 5, sailboarding since 10, scuba since 18 and kiting for the last 3 years (31 years on/in the water). I have been stung many time by jellies, stood on a few sting rays without incident luckely, found a big stone fish right where a bunch of us were walking in and out of the water to kite and been attach by a nine foot bronze whaler of birubi pt near Newcastle.

I still get out there every chance I can but I am cautious about dusk, I drag my feet across sand rather then stomp along in murky water, If fish/ other sea creature are acting weird or I see a big shark I am out of there!

Almost every one I know with the same sort of time on the water will have the scars to prove it or a very close call story.

AHHHHH thats it I am done. Dont stop kiddies, its fun just repect what is around you and dont assume it cant happen to you.

Too Soon????

One day two brothers, Jack & John decide to go out diving for seafood.

They quickly manage to fill up a sack of seafood so Jack decides to take it back to shore & grab another sack to fill.

John is out at sea all by himself when he see's a shark coming towards him.

Frantically he calls out to his brother Jack who is still at shore, "Bro Help me Help me there is a shark heading straight for me."

Jack calls back "Yeah Im coming bro"

John is freaking out, the shark swims right up to him & bites off his leg.

Again he is calling out to Jack who is still at the shoreline "Bro come and help me, the sharks bitten off one of my legs.

Jack yells back "yeah hold on Im coming!!"

John tries to stay calm and wait for his brother but then the shark bites off one of his arms.

He yells back to his brother Jack "Hurry!! Come and help me the shark has bitten off my arm and my leg."

Jack calls back "Hold on Im coming!!!"

Then the shark bites off his other leg, John yells "Jack you have to come & save me. The shark has bitten off both my legs and an arm."

And as usual Jack replies. "Just wait Im coming"

The shark then bites off Johns other arm.

Now John has no arms or legs.

His brother finally arrives to save him.

Come on bro, get on my back & I will swim you back to shore.

When they get to the shoreline Jack says with an exhausted sigh "I feel ****ed"

And John replies "Well I had to hold on some how!!!"
