Pretty straight forward really. I am after a bomb proof method for setting up a handlepass leash. I have seen many 'custom' set ups. What works for you?

I have smashed 2 flexi leashs and 1 cab leash in just 12 months and I am sick of shelling out!

Hey Pos, It has been an epic season all together however I just seem to be stuck in a loop of broken equipment and bad luck. Lost board (found
), ripped LE's, broken leashs, 2x pumps, hangover that ruined kite jam, collision than ruined the Woodies Jam.

All adds up to a great season! On the flip side I have moved onto unhooked tricks and need the aforementioned killer leash to take me forward! Also lined up a session at Moms - turns out I have access to a holiday house about 10minutes from launch!

C you soon buddy!

I just wish Slingshot would put their quick release on the right way (pull away from body to release). Seriously, who designs a QR that will fire everytime you accidentally grab the QR instead of the leash when riding suicide. And when you do want to use the QR, you need 2 hands to operate it. Please change this SlingShot. You have the best leash I've seen apart from one major flaw.

I bought a handlepass leash from NEW kiteboarding. Its a good design but is too short.

The NEW leash is 95cm and the SS leash is 120cm.

If the NEW leash was 120-130cm and the QR wasnt made from garden hose then it would be perfect.

The NEW leash has a fabric chickenloop to connect to your harness. I like this design because I always have the shackles unclip themselves.

Something wrong with your measuring stick.

The NEW leash is 150cm long.
90cm when elastic is in good nick.

It has elastic to make it shorter or it will hang around your knee.

Yeh I'm talking unstretched length.

The NEW leash is a good size but I want something that is a similar length to the SS leash which WILL hang around your knees, but that is just my preference.

I like the length of the NEW leash but i didnt buy it for comfort. I wanted a 'handlepass leash'.

Maybe NEW can bring out a longer version of their leash?

You mean the red toggle on the CL, or the red tube on the leash?? If you mean the leash release, this is a pull way from your body movement??... try turning it round so the red tube is at the harness end?? Hope this helps!

I have a bit of a belly and need an extra 20cm to wrap up for a 720 handle pass.
Is that what you mean as good handle pass length?

Do you have a SS leash? Youd know if you had one.

A 'normal' leash QR is a pull-away-from-body motion to release the leash from your harness.

The SS leash QR needs to be pulled towards your harness for it to release. Therefore when you drop the bar riding suicide and quickly grab the leash, you will sometimes grab the red tube on the leash and goodbye kite.

Also, you need to hold the leash with one hand and pull the red tube with the other to release when no tension is on the leash.

They have the quick release on backwards and I just assumed it was because naish had a patent on it. However other brands are copying naish so I'm prob wrong about the naish patent thing.

I am not riding with the red tubing end connected to the kite. If I were then I wouldnt have this trouble because SS have it on backwards.

And I like a nice long leash like the SS so were dissapointed with the NEW leash.

Sorry for bashing. The NEW leash is great but i wanted it to be the same length as the sligshot.
The sligshot QR is just on backwards

hey walshd, don't ride suicide with the standard slingshot leash. its only meant to connect to a 5th line setup, and it will release under pressure if you clip it to your chicken loop and drop the bar

Cheers stamp, that would explain my frustration.

Back to the topic: Does anyone know where to buy an off-the-shelf "Ultimate handlepass leash set up"

I'd vote for the NEW leash if it was longer

Longer?

Either you have go go gadget arms or your needing a leash for 1080's Wow!
900 would be possible if you were super skilled.

Seriously note. It also depends how you attach the leash to your harness.

Sliding rope across the back of your waist harness is good.
Long leashes get caught up on stuff when your grabbing your tricks. I'll let kitepower explain in more detail.

What sort of cab leash have you broken? is it one of the new ones? I find the QR quite out of the way, can operate with one hand and releases away from the body. Your kite must be dragging you heaps to break the leash - sounds like you need a custom leash with elastic and a rigid component. What does Hadlow use? He must punish his leashes a fair bit...
My Mystic waist harness has a sliding rope at the back that is also elastic which takes a bit of strain off the leash. It works better if you put a SS ring on the sliding rope. The sliding rope also has its own QR.

back when riding c kites and pulley bars was using suicide leashs, i had heaps of problems with braking leashes, so i went to a climbing store and bought some webed line( its like seat belt material made in a tube). great stuff, super strong, a kite wont ever brake it. its used with people working from heights with fall restraints. because its a tube you can feed elastic thru it to shortin it.
but now i use cabrinha one with no probs.

u never really need to much more length on ur leash to do a 720 if you attach it to the front next to ur harness hook. it sounds gay but try it, it is so easy to pre wrap and doesnt get caught on stuff along the way.

p.s. a 900 would usually require no more wrapping if u were starting from your toe.

I do the same, attach it on the front of your harness and then pre wrap for the intended pass. That way when you miss the pass (as I always seem to) then the kite pulls from the front of the harness. I have had quite a few missed passes to be flying backwards flapping the wings like a headless chook with the leash attach to the sliding line at the rear of the harness. Much prefer the leash at the front and can reach the safety easily if needed.

My two cents

that is also an advantage i suppose but is not the reason i changed. the reason for me attaching to the front was that you can pre wrap one way then pass twice (720) and still not be tangled in the leash any more than when you started.

I did not snap the leash. I am talking about broken gates mainly. I do think the addition of a short extension and ring along the back rope would help. I am interested in what other freestylers are using.

Sci, Been riding a lot unhooked this season and am also using a Cabrinha leash. Got Mike from Fetish to sew an extension for me. At first it was a little long and the plastic knob (QR) hit me in the head a few times when doing whippy kiteloops. Tied a few knots in the extension till it was the perfect length for me. Used many leashes, but always go back to the cabrinha, strong, Safe, simple and when you need to grab it always works

i like the longer ones cus you dont look silly wriggling under when your swapping the way its wrapped and then you can use it for other stuff if you get in a spot of trouble.
the New leash has the right style clip on it, there are problems with some of the other designs, i have seen the NEW style on other brands frequently so i think it might only be slingshot that still use the pointed ones that have caused some bad injuries and even a death.

Ok for starters it's not backwards just takes a little getting used to :-)
For a safety I use the slingshot leash that comes with the hammer head spreader bar pro from slingshot, super tough and I have not broken one yet, going on the third year with this leash. Yes I have been riding suicide with it that long..
How ever sci may be a little short for you..

C'mon Sorse, its backwards.

Are you talking about the standard leash that comes with the Rev?

Please please please please tell slingshot R&D to turn the QR around so that it is released with an away-from-body-motion on the red tube.

This is much safer and only requires 1 hand to release the leash from your harness.

1 surface pass to date and counting.....atleast i'm honest

Before all of you start taking the piss out of me, I think I have brough up a very valuable point here in regards to the SlingShot QR. Why is it backwards? No other kite brand does it this way.

Sorry for stressing this point so much, but I'm a huge fan of slingshot with their kites and bar setup being some of the best available. It just dumbfounds me that that something so simple to re-design has not been done for 3 years.

And I know that I'm not the only one out there that has nearly lost their kite because of this.

Walshd - I checked my SS leash last night, and your right. Never used it, but what a crock pot. Send a message to SSHQ.

Sci, a home made one does the job for me, made out of dynema core line for dingy line. Frikkin strong stuff, but now only use it attached to my 5th line after and absolute hauling riding suicide a few seasons back. I was thinking about going back the the suicide setup, but I think Ill just take the relaunch.

It had a pimp ass line round the back of the harness, with a pin release at the side (until I lost the pin) but the leash line could do with being longer to stop me looking like a wriggling gimp when trying to loop the leash over my head.

are you guys riding suicide for powered handlepasses? or is it better to ride 5th line.

I use the flexi leash which has the same pull towards body QR. its comes undone fairly often especially if I land hard after a kiteloop.

Just bough 2 metres of waxed climbing rope and a climbing cabrina. Couple this with cab leash and an extension and I could be in business. Will post some images of my new custom rig.

Cheers
