Well for starters, people don't dive in shark tanks to get eaten by sharks, they feed em n pat em, like a petting zoo. Imagine a shark rockin up at your place with a human zapper, sounds like fingers running down a blackboard at 100 decibels, what's not phucked up about that? Not 1 kiter has been killed by a shark. U R a D!ckhead if ur worried about shark attack. Here's Gls's review of the machine he bought to electrocute himself while kiting-

Hahaha.
Well I would really like to make sure that my particular unit actually does the job, otherwise I'm just trusting what other people have written on the Internet. I asked the guy's at the Shark Shield company and they said they made the mistake of doing that sort of testing in the early days. But its not fair on the shark. The shark can't go anywhere. So I let it pass. But if anyone's going burly fishing then perhaps we can hang it over the side of the boat and measure the expression on the face of the sharks.

Got a call from a mate down south that a shark was spoted in Botany Bay and that Westpac chopper monitored it for a lengthy period late yesterday arvo. Mate said the Bay was packed with kiters.
Any truth to the story.

It's like 25 knots here atm but theres warnings about going in the water cause of sharkies (packed full of bronzies) attracted byour recent flood. Im still going out, the seas so churned up right now (like 2m chop) i cant imagine a shark wanting to hang round the shallows.

Can confirm their was a westpac helicopter hovering around the pool of brighton about 200 meters off shore, was a hell day on the water to good to be worried about sharks, though Im sure, and so were the other guys that it was probably a shark, or a pack of bronzies as the bay is full of them.

Went for a lunchtime swim at Monkey Mia today. About 20 minutes later a fisherman came and told me about the 8 foot Tiger shark that swam thru where I was swimming.
Phukk, I'm glad the buggers have plenty to eat up here!

After reading about the noosa encounter i was having a chat to one of the lifesavers at caloundra today. I surf at happy valley their. I don't know if it could be the same shark but apparantly last week they caught a 5.2 mt tiger in the nets out off caloundra.. There is also another who comes in past the nets every now and again he reckons, they are obviously about. But Meh Surfing is too fun.

Just down to Sydney from up North. Have kited Noosa regularly in the past and also Rules Beach up Bundy way. Top spots and have often seen large sharkes off Rules. Wondering what the scene in Sydney is like. Have heard Botany Bay has a Marine Park which is a recognised shark breeding area. Does this affect kiting in Botany Bay.
thanks

Saw my first shark today, was kiting alone down south was about 500 meters offshore , when a rather large fin popped up in front of me, was pretty powered up on the kite so i decided to take a closer look.

As I got closer to have a look, the shark took off very quickly, was rather large maybe about 10 to 12 feet in legnth.Wind was to good so i just kept kiting , made sure though I did not come of my board.

This is an interesting point, if you see a shark or you believe you see something, do you tell other kiters and water users? I normally tell people kiting if i think i see something. It turned out to be a seal with its flipper in the air so on one occasion. WHat do you guys do?

Bigairman , where down south were you. I'm keen to learn about good kiting locations down here.
Don't get hungup on sharks mate, as I said in my earlier post Ive seen plenty but none have ever hassled me. Sharks are more scared of you than you think.
I had the opportunity to work on a trawler in the Gulf a while back. The Skip had a real hatred of sharks. He got bit, way back in WW2 when his Destroyer was sunk during the battle of the Coral Sea. Spent 50 hours in the water before he was resqued. He said 5 of his mates were killed by sharks and he had a chunk bitten out of his leg - his leg was pretty aweful looking. Anyway the Skip who at the time I worked with him was in his seventies used to stand on the bow with a 12 gauge and blast any shark that came into his sight. There were plenty of them in the Gulf, let me tell you.
In the three years I was on the boat I think he would have shot thousands of them. Plenty of times though we went days without seeing any - especially after he had slaughtered large numbers of them - as I said sharks are probably more scared of you than you are of them.

Not that worried about sharks kiterider, Im more worried about when I am going to have my next kite, or what the wind is doing or how i can pull a scam off to get out of work so i can have a kite.

I think thats what the majority of kiters worry about.
As for the south coast mate, just jump in your car and drive , pull into any beach that looks good as most of them work in a se or ne wind.

Or why dont you go and see steve from kitepower I am sure he will help you once you tell him who you are kiterider.

We have a system where you make a fin signal on your head to indicate a shark. We also have signals for lightning (or static electricity), water police, rock lobsters (yum) and sea urchins (ouch).

Failing that kiting off downwind a 100 miles an hour screaming like the day you were born works well too!
