I'm keen to get myself a new board but am only just graduating from my chunky beginners board and not sure on where to start looking.

I'm 75kgs and will mostly be using the board on the river, haven't been brave enough to hit the surf yet. If someone could give me some tips on board length, width, fins...whatever is thought to be useful info it'd be much appreciated!

Cheers,

Fresian..

You'll get a thousand and one opinions and comments here - so here's mine!

130-135 X 38-40, slight concave, lightweight, 40-50mm fins, some flat thru the mid section.

My favourites, Cardboard 133, Liquid Force Drop ltd 132/138.

Try as many as you can before buying one.

Whoa nelly!!!!!
All these board suggestions without the details.
Q- Do you plan to ride the surf when you are ready?
Big jumps?
Wakestyle?
Is the river smooth water or choppy?

No point in telling him the boards we like, he want a board that he will like.

Of course I am going to recommend my own boards but can I ask.
What size board are you on now?
Are you planning on keeping it for light wind?
Do you have a range of kites or just the 1?
Going on the info given I'd point you straight to an Edge 128, but you may want to go a size up for more range depending on the answers to the questions above.

Sorry for guys dragging my feet on the reply but been having killer IT hassles!

Anyhow, last season I was using a Naish 5'6" (165cm) board to learn on, more of a surfboard shaped board than the shorter squared off boards around. During the last of the summer seabreeze in March/April I had a crack on a Cabrinha Martin Vari 38 (138cm) and it was like riding on ice....but I guess that's going to happen going from a long board to a shorter one??

As far as trying out different boards, are you guys saying that when you shop around the stores will let you try different boards out?

The main spot I'm riding is the river which generally has chop when the wind is blowing.

Cheers,

Fresian..

Hey fresian,
I have one of Petes boards, the addictions and ride at the river regulary, will be there this weekend at Melville.
If you want to try a 138 Addiction i'm the bloke with a yellow bow, your welcome to try.
Most of the shops will allow you to demo, airbourne, SOS etc just need to negotiate with them i think.
