Has any one ever travelled over seas with surf boards before.

Is it a real hassel travelling with 2 boards in the one cover or should I just take one?

Do the air lines charge you for individual boards or just the board bag?

We have just flown Malaysia Airlines to Europe, Air France to Caribbean and Liat in the Caribbean. We hade very large long sports bag with 2 boards, kites etc and never had a problem, no extra fees (as long as less than 30kg for the bag and within total weight limits)just had to take it to oversize luggage after check in.

I think is ailine dependat as well. Also remember you can get GST back fr anything you have bought within 30 days of leaving if you take it with you, easily claimed at Sydney Airport.

Hey Fly Guy,

Most airlines policy is 1 piece of sport equipment per ticket. I do alot of travel round indo. 2 boards 1 bag no questions everMy mate I travel with is the same.

Just put padding between ya boards, talking from experience on that one

Hope that helps and happy travels to ya

Hey Fly Guy,

Best way to travel with boards and kiting gear is to put your wetty and towels and stuff between the boards and then wrap your boards in kites. I usually lay both my kites on top of each other and then place the boards at one end and roll them up in the kites, it adds an extra layer of padding and then snug them into the board bag. Bars go in last and the kite bags make nice tail protection. I usually only take one kite bag and one bar to save on weight.

it doesn't take much to put you over 32kg.

Happy travels.

Balin have great surf bags with 10mm padding top and bottom as well as hard plastic ( removable ) outline for the edges. My bag takes three surfboards easily ( fins off )with room for clothes towels etc...
When travelling indo etc.. I just pack the board bag and a carry on bag usually no extra charges ( once had to pay on a domestic flight from Jakarta to Padang ) about 10 dollars but I think the guy pocketed the money.
This bag will also easily take two kites and two boards and clothes...
I am sure other companies make similar products but this one has served me well and would recommend with out hesitation.

Hey Gasman,

I usually take a board bag a couple of sizes too big to allow for the boards and kites. I take my 6'6" and my 6'2" in a bag made for a 7'3" or the 6'2" and 6'0" in the 6'6" bag. It's a bit of a squeeze but if you remove all straps and fins, it's not too difficult. Place the fins in the wetty between the boards and the straps make good padding around the tail of the boards.

I always take minimum stuff with me to save on weight and excess baggage.

I hope this helps,

Never just bring one board or you will break your only board first wave!!!!!!!!

I have travelled all over the world and only ever been stung for extra money once(an internal flight in Hawaii). The secret is keep it light. Usually I just put my towels and wettie in as padding and that is it.

Also make sure at least one of your boards is in a day bag inside your travel cover.

If you can get to indo without a double or tripple bag you will be stocked cause you can get custom made board bag for 40-60$ bucks depending on what size and your bargaining ability. they seem pretty good and its nice to get something custom made for 2 boards with kites.

I got in trouble with Lufthansa. Leaving Australia was no drama, but getting back was different. Lufthansa refused to take the board. It was a 6.2 regular surf board - nothing big or heavy.

I had to pay them a hefty fee to get the board on the plane, can't quite remember exactly but around $100. It seems to be up to the airline and the local airport policy.

Pack it real well. When I finally got the board back on Australian soil the heavy duty board back was totally ripped and the tail of the board was completely smashed. Hundreds of dollars worth of damage after paying Lufthansa just to get it on the plane

I've pasted the latest baggage retrictions for some of the aussie airlines. Just check with the airline you are flying with beforehand and print off the page. Try not to exceed the weight restrictions or it can cost dearly. If you start taking more than 2 boards you'll be lucky to make it under the weight. Some good packing ideas already suggested. bon voyage

Watch out if you go United or American Airlines. They like to sting you with over sized baggage costs.

I got stung once for having two boards in seperate bags. On the way back I taped the two bags together and it was fine. Im sure it has more to do with the person checking you in more than anything else. problem is its hard to pick a power crazed check in chick from a distance.
