I think it is not only the North kites, on any kite for unhooked riding you will connect the safety leash to your chicken loop.

P.S: if you have a stopper for your depower trim you need to make sure to push your stopper to the very end of it that allow your trim to depower your kite.

I know this isnt as safe, but if you are connecting to the 5th line and dont want a tangle when you let go of the bar you can adjust the 5th line stopper to only pull through enough to depower the kite but not kill it completely, where it gets into a tangle.

Hey dudes, I'm just getting into the world of unhooked madness. I have 09 rebels. I did try to put the north safety leash directly onto the chicken loop (after a recommendation from someone). I was in about 17knots on my twelve and practicing unhooked raleys. After a big face plant I let go of the bar and to my horror surfaced to see my kite sailing off into the distance. So yeah, bottom line, the jaws won't hold the kite when connected to the chicken loop, only designed to attach to the 5th line.

Your problem can be easily solved and you can still use the same leash if yoou want.
Process:
1. get a pigtail off your mates kite (loop to loop)
2. dont tell him (this will be funny later)
3. get a small metal ring (the smae size that is used on Oh **** handles works best)
4. loop it around you chicken line itself or on you loop (this depends on how your quick release works, it should be easy to look at it and work out a good place to attach the pigtail)
5. now the pigtail is on loop the other ends loop through and over the ring so now the ring is attached to the pigtail which is attached to you loop/line.
6. attach you leash.
7. go kiting/ laugh at friends misfortune.
8 (optional) have a pigtail ready to offer friend in time of need, but tell him it will cost him a beer.

Now you know how to have your leash attached so it wont come off and you also get a beer for doing it.

The Mystic and Prolimit safety leashes are nice, both have Carabiners and Rubber-Foam around the leash keeps the leash from bruising your body and the releases never come undone if not intented!
