Hi Ste....welcome to the addiction :-)

Unfortunately, this forum isn't exactly the epitome of honest, unbiased opinion....particularly when you ask a question like that one. If you have a bit of a look through previous posts on this sort of topic, you'll see what I mean.

Is there a local kitesurfing crew where you are? If so, have a bit of a look at what everyone else is using. More chance of being able to get help from the locals if you're on the same/similar gear. Have you had a go at kitesurfing at all yet, or are you looking to buy gear and then get into it? If you haven't had a go yet, you might look at getting a couple of lessons first, just to see if it's the sport for you. That way you're not out of pocket for new gear if you decide it isn't.

EDIT: Oops....just read your previous posts. Ok, so you've had lessons.....good . I'd be looking for some recent second hand gear to get you up and going. Providing it's in good order, it's a much more economical way to do it, plus then you're not trashing brand new gear with the inevitable hammerings into the water .

Sorry, can't comment on the Venom....never flown one, but I *do* want to....just haven't had the opportunity where I am.

good advice
When you 'do' fly the venom you will find that the "inevitable hammerings " are not inevitable (particularly when combined with good instruction). Also it is important that as Bob Dawson says you fly the venom like you hate it(ie don't be afraid to be aggressive)

Cheers

Good Advice there from Mr Bonk, and yes the Peter Lynn Venom2 is most definitely a good kite!
You will need a lesson on one to make sure you understand how to launch, land and relaunch them, they are a bit different to inflatable kites in that regard.

Where in Oz are you located?

Cya and

Goodwinds

I meant on LEI gear, if he decided to go that way. Part of the reason I want to try the PL gear is because of the auto-zenith thing.....curious to know just how effective that is etc.

Good advice nevertheless

Auto Zenith can be a blessing and a curse ..
Blessing ,not as extreme as on the old std arcs of 5 yrs ago however as I rediscovered yesterday when munched by a 6 ft dumping monster wave having a kite that stays in the
air when being given the proverbial washing machine treatment is great .Also it is a handy feature for beginners when sorting out board issues ,waves, chop coming through etc

Curse .When riding toeside particularly the kite wanting to ride high can be a bit annoying(when holding the bar one handed )being aware of this and the cure (put your hand slightly on the opposite side to send it down )it isn't so bad .

anyway as I always say just try and see if you like .Where are you?

Regards

Lach

Bundaberg in QLD. The only water foils I've seen around this area (and Hervey Bay, where I was before I moved here) are the older style arcs, plus one guy with a flysurfer a couple of years ago. All the rest have been LEIs.

i have flown the venom a bit (not 2).

i weigh 110, was flying the 13m, and found that in all but winds 20 knots and above, i didnt have much fun.

i really had to work the kite, which usually ended up with me being down wind quite a bit.

it was a friends kite though, and maybe i didnt spend the time required to find out the nuances of it.

i worked it like i hated it, but in the end i hated having to work it like i hated it

A 110kg kiter with a 13mtre venom is crazy!
I'm 90 and i use a 16mtre...great job!
Most wind range is good.

I'd recommend the venoms to everyone...and do!!

I love and hate my venom. Used to have a 13m and 19m. Now just own the 19m. At 78kg the 13m used to get rarely used. The 19 gets used heaps.

The auto zenith is good, especially when you come off. As Mrfloat said the kite can try to sneak up higher in the window, this can be a bit annoying. Launching and landing good. Relaunch is good. Stability is awsome. The stability makes it easier to focus on your riding rather than flying the kite.

The annoying things are... when the kite tangle before a launch. After landing (to safetly) it can take a bit of setup to get ready for the next launch. This annoys me if i want to land and adjust the internal strap and relaunch.

I used to get very annoyed at the bottom end of the v19 (lacking in bottom end) but have light wind board now. It works Ok in the lower range with a big board. Once you get some apparent wind the ride is good.... it's just hard to get going due to slow turning / slow flight.

Hey I'm 80 KGs and my V2 13m is great.

With respect to Schmik's comments on landing, you can self land but I dont bother anymore, I have trained up the local LEI guy's how to catch an Arc so its no drama to drop the kite and change settings and get going again.

handy hint for launch.make sure that youi have plently of back line tension on the downwind tip .(Had to run a clinic for some local guys who rip but who couldn't launch for crup)Also a good tip if you crash and kite is relaunching
Also a good tip i got from Bob Dawson .only sand the area of the upwind tip just below the tip spar on the bottom skin .works a treat

cheers

78 kgs v2 13m ...below/around 15knts i use a big arse board (170 and nicknamed the 'truck')which is not particularly good for flashy stuff but still keeps a smile on the dial. As it blows harder I move to a 132 underground and have a ball.

For what its worth I also have an (antique) 630 s-arc which pulls the truck quite nicely from 22 ish. A handy option if I can't be stuffed dealing a gusty Swan river.

Should point out that I have no point of reference to comment vs LEI's...have never bothered to fly one in 4 years. S-arcs, Guerilla's and venoms only. I can say that I have never had one repair required.

Anyway V happy with the venom2....well supported by Neil at HTK here in perth too.

I'd say don't bother trying any LEI's if your happy with the arcs, I thought i'd be better off with a LEI so I bought a LINK...It was a peice of Sh!t...sold it only weeks after, lost half my money...don't try anything else....It's not worth the cost!
Whats more the guys i bought the LEI off, bagged the spit out of the Peter Lynns! I should have known when they started bagging....that I should have ran a million miles an hour away from them!
