Hi guys has any one had a go on the nrg 16m ? I'm after a lite wind kite for flat water twintip stuff . I'm 70kg and my biggest kite at the moment is a rpm 12m . Any info would be great as I can't fined much about them online . Just looking at one that's a good price at the moment it probably wouldn't be my first choice but I'm thinking it might be worth it at the price main concern would be a to big gap between my rpm and this what do you think ? Thanks

Have you thought about a best TS 15m? Still good for unhooking and freestyle. I think the prime wind is 12knots on the 15m

Hi John,

Mate of mine bought one last year. I was sceptical however was pretty impressed, he was up on a twin tip when others were struggling. i was riding in light wind however it felt nice to unhook on in the lightish conditions.

If it is a good deal go for it.

cheers

I used to have an NRG, 10m. I could ride in 10knots with it (70Kg) in an outgoing tide.
The trick with these kites is to get the apparent wind going then find the sweet spot, bing a high aspect they are easy to stall.
Used to love it because I could ride when no one else could. Those who tried crashed their kites and drifted out to sea lol.
Then I started unhooking and the NRG is rubbish for that, very hard to tune and often backstalled. One time I even looped it backwards lol.
So I got rid of it.
If you get one, make sure its not the first gen one, those are garbage at relaunching.

Have you thought that for light wind kiting a bigger board rather than a bigger kite might the answer. Half the price too.
I ride a Shinnster with a 10m Ozone Reo in wind barely enough to get the kite off the beach and with the help of apparent wind I can stay upwind with speed. I'm 64kgs. If you're in Sydney you're welcome to try my Shinnster.

Also, the Liquid Force single strut kites (solo) are light wind machines. Check out the reviews.

What is the lowest speed you are able to go on your 12 RPM? For you weight I would think you would 12 or 14 knots.
You might do well just getting a 14m RPM and that will get you down towards 10 knots if you have a sufficiently wide TT.

Solo's are good too, but they have the bar throw of a C kite.
If let it out too far it just turns into a massive luffing cloud.

Yeah best ts is defently in the running along with the North juice . I'm only looking for a kite a year old at most as what I have read that big kites have changed a lot for the better in the last year or two unfortunately finding most these kites second hand is as hard as finding rocking horse **** . I have tried bigger boards fly door , spleen monsterdoor but call me fussy or may be lacking the skill but I just don't enjoy riding them I did keep my Lerner board nobile t5 140 that I use when it's lite . How's the relaunch and power delivers on the nrg ?
Thanks

For light wind I have tried the Blade Fat Lady, North Dyno, Griffin TRX, Ozone Edge, Chrono ...... They all work well.

IMO....

The best of them for light wind free ride kiting is the chrono. They are a beast and you can find good second hand kites.
The best of them in surf is probably the griffin trx because it is so fast despite it's size. A new one is very affordable.

My 14rpm had the same wind range as a zephyr. No prob.

Relaunch is good for a big kite that you will be using in light wind, provided its not the first gen NRG.
Power is fine but you need to know how to get it moving then plant it once you have board speed.

I haven't ridden much of the NRG but I used it at Aussie Nationals last year and it was really really good. I was very surprised. Relaunch was fine and I could do all of my tricks on it easily. The lower aspect light wind kites tend to surge back in the window when you pop and can throw you off axis as you rotate. I found the higher aspect design to be a lot better for unhooking. I also fly the Solo 15.5 now and thought it would be ** for tricks but I was pleasantly surprised. It unhooks well and unlike what was previously stated it does not flutter like crazy granted you aren't in 20 knots (which I don't know why you would be doing that with your light wind kite anyways). Had one of my best sessions in a long time on it and even learned a new trick! I also foil on it and it stays in the air in 6 knots. Can foil at 8. Great kite. If you're going to get a good deal on an NRG though I'd do it. Wish I had one in my quiver now!

Both are good kites and both unhook quite well. You'll get more low end out of the NRG for sure but if you go into the high end obviously the TS will beat it. Just really a matter of what kind of winds you want to go out in!

I had the 2013 14nrg lw great kite as good as most light wind kites bottom end but not very good relaunch ive tried the 2013 2014 2012 and liked the 2013 best dont think the 16m has much diff wind range

I too had the 2013. It was a tractor with heaps of pull but not very responsive and heavy. I replaced it with a 17m Cab Contra and there's no comparison IMHO.

Ive found it pretty good, have ridden a few times with a skim board to get going in not much, can be a bit of a beast if you drop it. freestyle is a bit of a laugh also, have ridden the zephyr and a custom 16m C kite also found all of them a bit heavy, depends on what kind of riding you want to be doing to some extent also.

I had the TS 14m 2013. Surprisingly heavy bar pressure but built strong and pretty good turning. Id take that over an older NRg ie 2013 or older.

If you ever come to Perth you welcome to try my Nrg 16m 2014.
I find relunch okay until wind drops to level when you have to keep kite moving so it doesn't fall of the sky.
Must say it saved good few sessions in "off season " period.
It's well well made and rock solid so fairly bulky and heavy for that.
