What's up Australia

I might be headed down from Vancouver BC to Brisbane for 3-4 weeks in late March and early April. We are having a great winter up here with 14 30+ knot storms since November and plenty more days of lighter wind. Just wondering what the kiteboarding scene is like down there

What is the wind like that time of year? I am a heavier guy, 90Kg, and I ride 90% of the time on a 12m rebel. Whould this work down there

I want to learn wave-riding. Oz seems like the place to learn. Do you have some suitable spots for a beginner 'round Brisbane?

Do I need a wetsuit? (Right now I am riding in a 5/3 with a hood undershirt gloves and booties. It is still F*#*@in cold,)

Thanks

Scott

PS: If any of you are coming up to Vancouver bring your gear and warm wetsuit, then give me a shout and I will show you some spots. Also check out our local forum skypilotkiteboarding.com for kite beaches

Howdy Scott,

Spent a bunch of time in Squamish over the years climbing. I remember watching some guys kiting out at the spit in November/December thinking how bloody desperate they must be.

You will definately find Brisbane temperatures a nice change from Vancouver. You could easily get by without a wetsuit in March/April, but a good spring suit or wet shirt will cut off the chill on some of the colder days.

12m is definately the kite of choice around here. A lot of people get buy with a single 12m bow style/depowerable kite these days.

Brisbane has some OK flat water spots such as Redcliffe, Brighton and Wellington Point, but for surf the best options are either an hour south or north at the Gold or Sunshine Coasts. Both offer great open beaches with plenty of surf. Places worth checking out would include Kawana, Coolum, Noosa (on a N/E) on the Sunshine Coast and anywhere from Main to Mermaid beach on the Gold Coast. For surf riding make sure you respect other water users and stay well away the flagged beaches as these are reserved for swimmers.

PM me if you want more info.

Cheers,
Simon.

Hey Scott

I'm on the Sunshine Coast 1hr north of Brisbane. If you have a bigger kite than your 12, bring that too. I ride a 14m TD quite a bit of the time at that time of year. The wind is often under 20kts at that time. The surf is great up here even if you haven't ridden in the surf before. PM me when you get here and I'll show you some spots.
Cheers
Nick
