That's right! the WA kite surfing competition is going to be on! SOS is going to sponsor the event and giving prizes, we're thinking beer (maybe soft drink if a grommet wins).

It will be held on a Sunday. We'll announce if it's happening on the Thursday before the event. The announcement will be made here on this thread by me, JG, or JKeys.

All the people who rock up will be halved on the beach. Half will compete, half will judge. Then people will progress through further heats in a similar fashion.

No signing up, no set date, extremely casual, everyone welcome.

BTW, This is the brain child of John Geyer and Jonathon Keys, I'm just the messenger.

Actually,
Winter is a very good time of the year to stage a wavekiting event.
Especially if the timing can be flexible and short notice is acceptable to all involved.
Keep it casual and the Gods will deliver.

Back in the old days (before kiting),
the poleys would pencil-in the first three weekends for the month of August for their 'cold-front classic' wavesailing comp.

The venue was always at Gearies,
and it was just a case of getting lucky with jagging the passage of a front over one of the three allocated weekends.

Sometimes they pulled it off, and other years they weren't so lucky.
The weekend is only 2 days out of 7, so the odds can work against you sometimes.

And if you believe in the '7 day cycle' like I do,
cold fronts can avoid weekends for weeks and weeks.
For example, if a cold front crosses the coast on say a Tuesday on the first week,
there's a good chance the next front will cross on the following Tuesday or maybe Wednesday.
The '7 day cycle', a natural phenomenon, but not an exact science.

Frustratingly,
some of the best wavekiting conditions happen late on winter nights in my neck of the woods.

Have to agree with Waveslave. Winter provides the chance of some decent swell. Last minute call is the way to go to try and jag some wind. First day of a front seems to be mega strong and the next, nearly none. I guess who ever is putting it on can pick the spot that suits them best. Lets hope we get a go at it.

I agree for perth there is no point holding a wavekiting event in any time but winter, and you do need this system. For some reason I just assumed it would be a freestyle comp which wasn't specified or a location which would also be a give away.

for location they're thinking perth beaches. Not because they're best, but because it's a perth comp. Leighton to Trigg, somewhere in between. Depends on the swell.

not this year but one year I would like to see the wave states actually be held where there are some decent waves, lano for instance at the end of summer.

Good call Andy I reckon Leightons for Sunday is the best bet, because of the curve in the beach around to face a bit North it will be a lot more sideshore there than elsewhere. If the forecast is to be believed it will not be hugely windy [around 20kts WSW] and the swell at 3.5m should get leighton breaking. and the little bit of Norwest we are having now should get some sort of banks happening.

Personally I dont fancy just 20kts of dead onshore Brighton with 3.5m of swell.

Thanks to John and Andy from SOS for pulling it together today.

We actually had a contest which is the actually the first WA kite wave riding contest this year and rather than waiting for perfection and then nothing happening, as happened in the summer for the contacio classic, they just kept it simple and ran it.

The location was definitely right for a westerly as every where else was virtually dead onshore. It Wasnt perfect by any means with the waves pretty short and mushy and wind a bit onshore and teasing most of the day but never quite steady or strong enough to be perfect, but we had had a comp, we got a result [congratulations Dale] and proved that organising Judge's towers, catering ,prizes, intercoms and all the usual paraphenalia really isn't necessary and when your are being judged by a large group of other kitesurfers its hard to argue with the result.

The good news is that there is a plan to run another contest during the winter and I definitely think the enthusiasm is there. MAYBE we'll get a Northerly, now that really would be interesting.

yeah i reckon it was great.

We called leighton on Friday morning because the forecast was for a massive swell. It didn't turn out that big.

It would have been nice to move the comp to scarbs, but if we'd moved on the day, we would have had only half the competitors who turned up late.

I was amazed by the numbers for such a low key comp. Stay tuned, we'll try to do it again, maybe make some changes, but definitely keep it extremely simple.

Congratulations Dale! I don't know the rest of the results.

Wave Comp on Sunday - Fantastic day of wave riding. 1st Dale Stanton 2nd Niall Barnett - 3rd Jake Gordon 4th - Corey. The comp was totally contestable in the demanding conditions. The comp was in 15 to 25 knots West with a touch of South in it. The lefts were the choice of the day. Very on and off conditions. Very wintery, rain showers, etc with onshore - side shore conditions with lots of bump in the 2- 4 ft faces. All riders gave it a good shot. All riders also judged the heats they were not in. Riding and judging in the same comp was a Fantastic personal in-site into WHAT LOOKS good when riding a wave. The final came down to 8 riders with varing styles, all capable doing strong manouvers. The 30 mintue final came down to what rider got the longest and most consistant rides and a bit a luck. Dale was the one from the 15 minute mark, with long rides and heaps of stylish reos and slides, front and back side. Niall a close second, lots of vertical reos and airs, but lacked the longer rides of Dale. Jake was on fire early with long stylish snaps but faded towards the end of the heat. Cory was in-front early with long powered rides and big carving reos and spray, and lots of variety in his riding( powered 5m surface handle pass back onto wave face) but his reo's were a bit less vertical than the other riders, and he faded towards the end. The other riders in the heat had less luck with waves and lacked lenght of ride. Some of my high lights were Johnny Geyers near death experience with a semi- beach lofting, Rylands 10ft reo strappless air that he didn't quite make. A Great day every one. We are going to try run 4 comps like this winter season at varing locations that suit the day. Like to get into a day at Scabrough next. Watch this space. Regards. Johnno Keys & Johnny Geyer
