Last week I had only my lines out and have now been fined by an over enthusiastic council cop and his side kick. Complete with digital camera and bad cop attitude!!

So, I understand there has been past delegations to council. What went down?

I would like to get some facts on what has gone down in the past before I protest the fine. I sure dont want to make things worse but I am really angry and would like blood but will prepare before battle.

This occured on a Monday afternoon, very few people about and I stupidly co-operated with the rent a cop.

Put me in touch with whoever was the fearless leader of the delegation please

So let me get this straight, all you've done is run your lines out on the beach and you've copped a ticket for kiting?

What's the wording on the ticket for the offence you're supposed to have committed and, just out of interest, what was the ticket worth?

Cheers.

Your not allowed to rig on grass, see the below taken from SEQKA website before you start getting too exciteable.

Wellington point (30mins East of CBD)
Wind directions: SW/N/E all tides. S/E in high tides.
Conditions: Flat to chop with some butter flat water at mid tide next to the sand bar.
Precautions: No equipment or rigging allowed on the grass areas. All setting up and kiting to be below the high tide mark due to local council rules - fines do and have been issued!. A lot of people at times on weekends and holidays, some blue jellyfish in Summer. Rocky areas to avoid- check with the locals for advice on areas.

Yep, was on the grass. local by law 25 or whatever.

so hard line is just to cop it on the chin but the reality is we often set up there and it is russian roulette regarding the fine?

perhaps a volunteer force of rent a cop spotters and a siren that sounds!

viva la resistance

Anyway, what advice

Yeah as Paul said.
We all heard about someone being given a fine, didn't hear too much else about it.
IF YOU => [If I wasn't mistaken, the fine was handed out near the beach area where children, windsurfers and prams are the main feature. There's a reason the locals never set up there now. PLUS whoever it was that was fined pretended they didn't speak english; poor attempt.]

C'mon, laws are there for a reason and we have all been through countless meetings with the council to try and rectify this!

Say speeding, do you dispute the fine because you didn't see the speed limit sign!? Same thing could be said.

If we are caught with our kites on the grass, we bite the bullet and pay the fine!!!!
Sorry, but we don't need more problems from council because others dispute the law!

In NSW it is an offence to not give your details to an "Authorised Officer" if you have in fact committed an offence. It is better to give your details over than get the police involved, which would have been the next step if you hadn't of complied. You did the wise thing, you can always argue it in court later if you feel so inclined.

Yes but as long as your wallet isn't in clear sight even in NSW you can claim you don't have your wallet with you and give them a fake name. I did it on the train once, I usually pay but once I had no cash coming back from the beach when I was still at school.

The PM, I'll send you details of the most active negotiators by private message. But I think there would be little to be gained by reopening negotiations.

Rigging on the point risks causing us more grief. Without wanting to be holier than thou (too much), I always rig and launch from the sandbar or flats - if the tide is too high, I go somewhere else. If you get a fine for breaking the council by law, which seems very reasonable to me, then please don't complain.

Although the sign is obvious in Liz's post above, it is far from obvious to anyone who doesn't know where to look for it. I'd been kiting there for years before I found it. So newcomers to Wello beware.

While on the subject of Wello, if the guy who nearly decapitated Ernst yesterday is reading this (Blue LEI...I didn't see what brand/model), please contact me or any other Wello regular for some advice on safe kiting practice. Any Wello regular would be happy to help you launch and land, subject to you demonstrating basic safety awareness/competence, rather than have you take out one of the crew or a member of the public.

Hey thepm,

Wello kiters have worked hard to retain access to that spot, and it is an awesome spot.

You did the wrong thing, were caught, and got fined. Take it as a learning experience and move on.

Don't go trying to raise a big stink over this as it will start to create bad blood again between kiters and council and give them an even bigger bone to pick with their red pen and ticket books.

Kiters use Wello point with permission of the Council as it is, you rock the boat and permission could be taken away all together.

I learned long ago that you cannot win anargument with the law, they hold all the power.

Good winds,

What caused Redland Bay Council to ban it in the first place?

Bad incidents? I'd like to know. Sort of let's us know what will happen if we let the monkeys get away with stoopid crap at our locals.

i remember back in 2002 - 04 a lot of folk were leaving kites set up around the bbq's and covered seating, virtually making them inaccessible, but not sure if that's the reason. there seemed to be plenty more kiters at wello back then anyway so it was bound to get congested on the grassed area

I'm surprised no one else has already filled in the blanks about what happened. Oh, hang on, there was a sweet Northerly blowin this arvo so they are all probably still down the point kiting.

What happened? Well in the few times I have been there I have seen people land kites on top of children being pushed in prams by their mum, kite dangerously close to swimmers, have lines break whilst doing tricks just upwind of swimmers etc.etc. There have been some actual injuries I think, but only to kiters from what I know of.

Wello gets crowded both with swimmers and kiters. The problems then start with just few people who do the wrong thing where there's no room for error. It's a shame really. In the right conditions Wello goes off. I tend to stay away now if I think it's going to be crowded.

The local crew are very helpful. If you are heading down there and not familiar with the rules then ask someone. If you get sprung setting up on the grass then I think you need to accept you took a chance and lost. Best answer is to kite somewhere else if the high tide is going to leave you no room to set up on the beach. Chrs, W

BigWaveDave, Though I stand to be corrected by those who were involved, I understand the main incident that got the Council angry was several years ago. A non-local (I think from overseas) "kited" there with a 16m C kite in a strong gusty westerly. Having been told one day by the locals that it was too dangerous he left. Same scenario again the next day - but he was apparently determined to kite. He ended up on/in the toilet block with several broken limbs and various other injuries - not sure whether he went over or through the power lines....

Ref Nuker's comments, some bad & quite unnecessary behaviour continues ...and could no doubt result in an incident. To those who know what you're doing, please take greater care - believe me, we can still see you do the back roll kite loop to blind when you do it 100m out rather than 20m from the rock wall! But, as Nuker says, the crew is friendly and will help - so if you're a noob (or not that new but very slow to learn), please ask for help when launching/landing and ask about local conditions/regulations/best practice/circuit! Also, if you're a noob, Thorneside is much better for learning (much nicer bottom) than Wello in a northerly - best tide for there is between 1m and 2m at Brisbane bar.

Also Nuker notes that "Wello gets crowded". Although this is true, it really only applies to the best flat water near the swimming beach. In a nor easter, the whole sand bar, which is about 1km long, provides magic flat water...why not just kite further out the bar? Those of us who kite there won't bite. There are usually no swimmers out there - though apparently one small group of swimmers were claiming the whole sand bar for themselves a few days ago!

I hate to say it - but youd be better off giving the TryHards & Noobs a good blasting when you see stupid stuff going down, as it is these people who have ultimately got you that fine !!

I AM SOOOOOO SICK OF AUSTRALIAN AUTHORITIES WRAPPING THIS NATION UP IN COTTON WOOL.... This was once a tough country, until all these moronic assholes started lawsuits against councils. Take Bondi Beach for example. Some tool goes down there 6 years ago after an all nighter on the piss, dives under a wave without putting his hands out in front of him, hits a sandbank, breaks his neck and sues the council.

Not to mention the transportation department / speed camera addiction.
There used to be a really efficient roundabout here on the coast, but because a few tools didnt know how to naviagate a roundabout and crashed they proceeded in ripping it up and replaced it with 4 fXXking sets of traffic lights (as with the roundabout near bris airport).

FOR FCK SAKE..... TAKE OFF YOUR SKIRT, AND HARDEN THE FCK UP AUSTRALIA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
