I live the same distance from both so can anyone tell me if either is better in any particular conditions/wind direction?

Wello is flatter and the water is cleaner but you can get fined for setting up above the high water mark. Brighton is a good learner spot but dam choppy at low tide. Both pretty good for kiting in differing wind directions.

Wello by a mile...

Wello you can kite in all directions, and you have the option in a Northerly to Westerly to kite on the deeper manly side of the more shallow straddy side on mid to high tide. Wello is fairly flat and great from beginners, up to grommie and the champs to kite in, so it's well suited to all riders. The tide can sometimes be an issue if it's a Southerly to Easterly as you can only kite on the straddy side, and if it's low tide, it's a fairly long walk out either towards the boat markings or kite before the peir. YOu can only set up on the sand area as there is a $250+ fine for setting up on the grassed areas if you are caught. Rocks can be an issie if you stack it shallow and intend on walking upwind, and a boots must for most riders who want to avoid cuts or who don't intend on walking lol. You can avoid the rocky areas (Inspect on low tide to find the areas to avoid). Plenty of space, many experienced kiters, and they are all excellent at kiting around each other, and are super friendly

Brighton goes fairly deep (high waist to neck high) fairly quickly, and can be extremely choppy if you are not used to it. If kiters spread out there is a fair area to kite in, but gets crowded really quickly. There is minial area ot set up, but enough to 'just' fit everyone in. There is a small 'reef' area you will ned to avoid on mid to low tide, but so far so good. Brighton is the go on Se's, Ne's and most directiosn from what I know.

A vote for Wello from me though

Cool thanks looks like it's wello then. How bout further afield are there any lakes or lagoons within a couple hours drive up or down the coast worth checkin out?

Lakes and lagoons are notoriously bad for gusty/holey conditions .

They also invariably have trees around them and often nowhere to launch and retrieve.

I agree with Wello being a much better place with much less jellies as well. Their is just no flat water at Brighton and all you have is just chop. The wind I think is better at Wello for some reason.
I think if your a learner or just desperate for a kite then that would be the only reason I would go to brighton.

Save your money and travel to the Gold Coast, it has BLUE water, no jellies, no sharp obljects, no booties needed, set up anywhere you want, clean sand and hot chicks.

On the other hand stay in Bris why would you travel?

there's some amazingly flat water at Brighton but it is only for 30 - 45 mins about 1 hour or so either side of high tide. Great if you can get it.

I beg to differ on that one, a week ago I was out at the train (Southport) and managed to step on the ONLY OYSTER-INFESTED ROCK in the whole dang place... couldn't see it as it was in chest-deep water, cuts still haven't healed!!

Nice work everyone that's all good stuff. Richrelative you make a good argument for the Goldie and I get down there a bit anyway so where should I have a look at down there? If you got some secret spot don't worry I'm a crap kiter so I'll make you look good to all the hotties on the beach.

'the train' is kinda left by all the local kiters for the windsurfers to have, loders and shearwater are much better. Or you can go anywhere away from the flags on the surf beaches.
But No kiting at Currumbin Alley - its a no go zone for kiting atm.

There is a nice bakery at Brighton :)

Does anyone live real close to Wello...and have a shed I could leave my gear in (in a month or two)? I ride a motorbike and can't really ride it with my stuff from Mansfield.

Well I used to windsurf at Wello 20 years ago, and I still carry the scars over my feet from all the bloody sharps. I like Brighton because most of the whole area has no sharps and the depth out from the beach is consistent. Perfect for a beginner
