Hi Guys, this will be the first of many posts on this forum.

I am planning on moving to Oz for at least a year kite a lot and work a little. My first stop wll be Perth in Novemeber. I would like to buy a vehicle when i arrive to live in but can't figure out what i should look for; van, station wagon, 4X4, etc. Can anybody offer me any good suggestions.... Will i be able to get all over Oz in a camper van, or will i need a 4X4??? Is a camper van even worth it???

it comes down to what you can afford, stamps advice would be the best for sure but probably the most pricey (including fuel cost), a 4x4 Ute with a caravan that sits on the tray (Villanova) could be ok too, possibly a bit cheaper and can come off and free stand so your not driving every were with it all the time but just make sure its lockable - my mate has one and has driven around Australia a few times but finding a setup like this might be a stretch. Otherwise a 4x4 van with decent wide tyres and a compressor would do the job for around most beaches - just make sure you have the customary sticker on it regarding when it’s rocking don’t come a knocking.

Troopy would be first prize, but most expensive, as above. Second prize would be 4x4 of some description, probably a van as it will be the easiest to throw your gear and yourself in and out of with least effort and most security. If you can't afford that still then a 2wd van for the same reason. If you're prepared to make public your expected budget then we could probably help more, or pm me if you want.

For the budget conscious, a Toyota Delica or Mitsubishi Express 4x4 would be ideal if you can find one cheap enough.

Alternatively, to go anywhere and ride like a king you could buy a Nissan Patrol, Yeah Baby! Only problem with Patrols is that anytime you go offroad into the serious stuff it takes forever to get to your destination because you are constantly being flagged down to pull out bogged Toyota Land Cruisers

Heheh kitehard I owned a toy last year and switched to a 4.2lt td patrol this year mind you one thing about patrols is they have a tendency to get hot - even boil if the radiator is clogged (Insects from alot of long distance driving - which sanamarco you should check when you look for any vehicle to buy that that isnt the case) when on the sand but apart from that ridding on coils is like heaven compared to the leaf springs I had on the toy.

good ol' toyota ute will get you just about any where... 2 or 4 wheel drive ...and for 7k to spend, thats about as close to a 4x4 you will get . any 4x4 under 7k will cost you another 10k to keep it on the road in repairs. remeber how may clicks you will do just getting out of WA!(if you ever leave)

At the moment i have a Toyota Tacoma (Hilux) and i just love it. I do a lot of the work on it so i know how Toyota builds a vehicle. If i can, i would like to stick with a Toyota, i just need to find one in good condition with a solid lock on it to secure my stuff. A 4x4 would be nice, but it sounds like i will be able to get to most places with a 4X2, just no bombing around on beachs, which is lots of fun.
