The most incredible thing happened to me the other day.....
A nice breeze whipped up by an incoming storm had me out around 2.30pm
out of my home break. I was heading out past the shark net to gain some ground and almost flew straight into two adolescent hump backs, approx 10mt & between 5<10T (not small), breached in front of me.
And proceeded to do all the stuff you see on the whale watch ads.
I was blown away to say the least especially when one came close enough to eyeball me.Kenamazing!!!!!!!!!!!
The experience for me was definitely the pinnacle of my 6years of kiting.
IT DOESN'T GET ANY BETTER THAN THAT!!!!
I still get tingles thinking about it.

before anyone says
"don't you know you have to stay 50m away from whales " and all that sh!t.

I'm sure the 10T+ whales didn't feel threatened by a lowly kitesurfer.
(unless you were carrying a harpoon)
Of course, that's not to say we should all go and chase whales.

Sounds like an awesome experience. Thanks for sharing it.

now THERES an extreme sport! hunting whales with a hand-held harpoon while kitesurfing. the japanese should get onto that.

what and you didn't try to jump it or see if you could jump higher!

I saw one up at lennox a few weeks ago and went out for a closer look but it went into the deep blue not to be seen again.

i did a similar thing a year or two ago... cruising out from leighton towards cables and kinda realized there were a couple whales cruising up the coast all of 30-40m in front of me :)

You lucky man....had to wait 4 years to see my first sharkie. It happens by accident I guess....or, are there people out there who try and kite with whales?

I was thinking about taking a closer look yesterday, a few humpbacks close to shore putting on a hell of a show. Instead I had a close encounter with a submerged milk crate while trying to avoid a million bluebottles.

Nice.

I was on a small 4-5m boat up at Ningaloo when a whale popped up about 15m in front - surfaced, cruised, and then went straight under 5-10m before us. I swear i was waiting for bump and a big tip out into the blue. Freaky at 1st but amazing. You just don't realise what they are like till you get within earshot in their environment...

As for your experience - what a ripper! My french mate would put it this way "Farque le duck!" Did the big guy give you a wink and ask what size kite you were on?

I did mention I wasn't Japanese.
The good or bad thing was they were much closer to shore
than I've seen before, so
I stayed between them and the shark net.
They seem to be whale magnets as well.
Just like that buoy is a kite magnet!!!
But thats another story.
Cheers

As long as the tails of big fish flap up and down your safe, it’s when they flap side to side that you got to be a little concerned!

Have had three dolphins swim underneath my board while cruising along - that was pretty darn kewl!
