Hi all,

We're moving to Perth in about 2 weeks. Wondering what suburb to head for to be close (walking distance carrying gear) to a good kite beach, and also walk to a train to the city if possible, otherwise bus.

Have looked at kitebeaches and searched seabreeze but can't seem to find much info on which sections of the city beaches are open to kiting, but patchy internet here is making it painful.

At the moment I'm thinking Cottesloe...? any other suggestions appreciated.

Thanks,
Dave.

PS will make sure I talk with some locals when I get there to find out the do's and dont's.

Lol,yep sounds good but only if mum and dad are mega loaded
Check prices for rental in Cott and you may get a bad surprise
Awesome spot if you can afford it tho
Heaps of kiters up in Scarborough and a bit more affordable.
Melville if you want flat waters.
Welcome to WA and enjoy the wind

eh Dave, I did my homework on this already
The best spot would be between the sea and the river! But you need the money!
If you do then I would pick Claremont or Swanbourne, it's more central from there you can use a pushbike to move either side..sea or river

Dave

We moved here from Sydney 2.5 years ago and love it. We live in East Fremantle. You got the choice of Leightons, Woodies, the river(point walter), Dutchies and a short drive from down south e.g. safety bay, secret harbour. I love living here for all those kiting reasons and the best people as well really friendly and nice and when you move from interstate, thats what you want if you don't know anyone. We firstly lived up north of Perth and hated it.

PM me when you get here if you like and we'll go for a kite. We rent at the moment but own a place in Sydney and Gero, we're waiting and watching the market to buy this way.

Cheers

Golden Kiting Triangle (GKT) IMO is from Applecross to Woodies to Scarbs. You have 8 locations in all wind directions within 20 min or so...heaven

Ahhh the infamous phenomena known as the "Golden Kiting Triangle"

Many a good spouse has ventured into the GKT only to inexplicably reapear at dusk... delerious and wind blown. Although some may physically return they are never quite the same again.

if u move to freemantle i suggest U STAY AWAY FROM THE GOVERNMENT HOUSING PLACES
i lived in freemantle for a month and if you combine the stupid birds in the morning and the aboriginals at night i found it hard to sleep. i ended up buying ear plugs but they didnt do much
but the kiting is unreal so it makes up for it

I would recommend Balga. It is very well located - close to the city, freeway and a short drive to Scarboro. Plus there is always plenty of action and it has some of the best priced houses in Perth.

Nah, just stirring. Live as close to the coast as you can afford imo.

Thanks for all the responses... will definitely try to find a place in the golden triangle - we're not fussy a little dingy granny flat or something will do if it's cheap. Not sure if we'll get work so we'll give it a month of looking hard and move on if there's nothing. Will definitely avoid gov housing areas had enough hassle with junkies and paint sniffers living in Spring Hill in Brisbane.

The WAKSA site has all the info I was hoping for - cheers for the link..

Specimen will PM once we settle in.. hanging for a session as it's been 2 months, I'm even dreaming about kiting, I keep seeing these awesome spots and trying to get there, but I can never quite get there or if I get there my gear has disappeared..

Mate, you're dreaming about WA! You get fantastic wind in spots you can definately get to and return after a kite session to find your windows smashed and all your gear has disappeared.

Welcome to WA

We live in Bicton, which is a really convenient distance between Pt Walter, Melville, Leightons and the city (work). If you can't afford living right on the water, then you could do worse than somewhere between Freo and the Canning Bridge.

Good luck!

Heh Kitehard even had the wife chuckling with that one.. seems pretty different over there I've seen all the break in reports over the years. At Brighton in QLD lots of people don't even lock their cars, leave their gear all over the beach all day, and nothing walks away. At least we won't have a car to get broken into!

When we made this plan less than a year ago they were desperate for piping designers (drafting, oil & gas industry) and I would have had a great job within a week, would have been able to live by the beach.. now I'll take a bar job if necessary and probly end up in Balga! How times change.
