Hi Guys, I know not everyone subscribes to the hook knife theory of survival.
I had one come with my Dakine harness and lost the Knife from its pocket after 2 sessions. I have another but cannot find a place to keep it where it is safe secure and accessible in the event off me needing it.
Any bright ideas?
Thanx Jim

I keep my hook knife in my hook knife pouch on my Mystic Warrior '07.
As for other places to put one... perhaps have it in the same pocket on the back of your Dakine but put some stretchy cord on it so you won't lose it again?

I have used a dakine harness for the past 3years and the hook knife seems to stay in the pocket no worries.
The velcro seems to hold it in the pocket surprising well.

Then again I havent tried (or had to...touch wood) take it out of the pocket, except to look at it when I first got the harness.

The idea from Koma of an elastic cord should do the trick.

Im off to make sure my hook knife will pull out of its pocket in an emergence, maybe salted and rusted in????

I have one in a pouch that sits on your harness strap to the spreader bar.Very easy to get to when needed. Have had it there for 9 mths now ,seems fairly safe there. The pouch has a velcro opening so it can be tucked away without loosing it. Cant remember what brand it is.

Have been |----------| this close to using it when some asshat crashed his kite on me then flagged it to fifth leaving me f'n wrapped in the rest of the lines. The only reason i didn't use it because i felt bad about cutting the morons lines as i know how much a lineset is.

Thankfully, i also managed to untangle and GTFO of the mess unscathed.

I use an old curly cord from a mobile phone charger as the attachment line to the knife.
Cut off the charger ends tie it on , stays out of the way but long enough to use. I use the same thing on my kite cam as a safety lanyard , just in case it comes loose from the mounting.

I kindof agree. All big accidents i hear of happen to quick for a person to even eject. Let alone think, reach for knife, fumble with the velcro, nearly drop it, get it in the right position with one hand, steady aim at the lines, and slice.
All whilst under lots of pressure, getting thrown around like crazy.
I think RayQ has the right idea. They would be a much better seat belt cutter that could be used in a car accident.

Nice one!

I keep mine in the pocket that's provided, doesn't quite fit, lost one already...

I was kiting in the waves in Indo this year when a nice German gentleman (named Klaus-of course) decided to throw his kite over mine resulting in us being in the water together with our lines wrapped around each others-he panicked (too many waves)-I asked him to please keep his lines taught while I unwrapped our lines by taking my bar and unwinding around his lines-NOW if I had had a knife (which I've never carried)-I would rather have stuck it into the German than his lines-but I'm a gentle fellow and merely smiled and kited off......might have to get one of those knives........

Came very close to using a hook knife a few years ago. Had it out in hand, ready to go.

This is how the story went. It was a hot summer day, very crowded beach with a fresh north easter blowing. There was a guy with a stunt kite on the beach flying the thing all over the sky, buzzy sunbathers and getting in the way of everyone.

We asked him politely to go somewhere else since he was being a nuisence. He told us to buggy off, or words to that effect. So we did, briefly.

We came back with a few more people and a line knife and said, "Hey mate, see this. It's a line knife. Put your kite down or we cut your lines.

He thought a moment and finally agreed that it was best to go fly his stunt kite some place else. A line knife saved the day.

There has been a lot of discussion on Kite Forum in the past few months regarding double versus single blade hook knives. just search under "hook knife".

Turns out the single bladed ones are almost useless, requiring some 60-70kg of force to cut through a single strand of spectra kite line.

The double bladed ones require only something like 10kg of force.

After reading that, I ditched my single bladed ones and got one of the double bladed ones, you buy them online from the skydiving gear shops.

Not so, you can hurt someone with a hook knife. The only part of the human body that can fit is the tongue. I think I feel nauseous.

going past fishermen can be dodgy as well on a downwinder yesterday and my mate got caught up in some fishing line, lucky for him the hook got caught in his safety leash but he used his hook knife to cut the line away from him it also went through the steel tracer as well which was impressive. We reckon the fisherman would of thrown him back anyway. Beware of balloon floats as the line can be quite along way away from the rod.

neoniphon .. have you attached the pouch the Captain Hook comes with to your harness? Does the press stud clip get rusty? Cheers

Not answering the question-but it's easy enough to do a mod and make something up to hold it-in all seriousness I probably will get one-particularly when kiting big surf, alone and in remote locations.

I like the idea of the carbon version-although the colour wouldn't be so great if you dropped it and had to go for a dive after it.
