Where is the best wind at the moment, and in general where is the best wind in winter.
The more consistent the wind and the more kiting days the better.
I heard a while ago it may be Port Douglas... ? I understand that WA is probably not the place to go at this time of year.
Any pointers.
Cheers

I reckon south east qld gets a lot of south easterlies at this time of year. In winter its far nth qld for trades, or tassie for 5m frontal stuff.

SE QLD drops off from now. FNQ, Port Douglas like you said, is a safeish bet. The farther north the better.

is there anyone to ride with at exmouth that time of year, is it windy?

I spent a while up north east last year, not epic everyday perfectness but i really enjoyed it for what it was - warm and some wind (no waves - well sort of some waist absolute max shoulder high sometimes but usually not, can be choppy can be ok.. sometimes enough wind sometimes not) . It really cranks if you go 4wding further north but quite harsh environment. Cable was fun too, well except for the concussion.

I think there are a few who do. SUCK have informal group trips occasionally. Personally I would rather go downhill snowboarding.

If you had say 24th of June to 19th of July free and you lived in Vic with no fear of cold and keen surfer but prefer wind, would you:
a) stay in vic and chase the wind around the coast/bay
b)go to South Oz
c)go up NSW coast

my gut feeling on limited research and experience is Vic will be best?

go somewhere different. even if you get skunked at least you get to check out some new country & coastline, plus scope out some spots and surf different breaks if there's no wind.

the wind down south is unpredictable in winter

April is the least likely month to get wind in Exmouth but you never know.

Lizard Island unbeatable for wind during trade wind season. Look at
Probably one of the most wind consistent places in the world.
You can check the Cape Flattery bom wind reader and add about 5-10knts.
Lizards surrounding sand caves on the low tides got some amazing flatwater.

If you want to stay on the coast Alva is windy, got flatwater and waves and is always in for 5-10knots more in the late arvo ;)
One of the best locations i have seen in Australia no doubt.

Cape Flattery from now on is a sure bet. Have a look at Ant's camp at Kitesurfari. He now has cabins in place so no more flapping tents and no need for ear plugs to get to sleep. The wind there is just insane.

FNQ, not Vic. We now wait for storms or occasional strong northerlies. Summer and sea breezes are over.

Your right about Lord Howe Bennie, a real good winter option with plenty of wind & swell. Blowing 20 to 30kts as we speak. Real good package on offer this year through Kitepower or Oxely Travel. Quite a few guys coming over already!

jellies are only a worry in the wet season (summer, autumn), and crocs are always around but more aggressive and mobile in breeding season (also wet season)

I heard from a Townsville local crocs are scared of kites as they look like pterodactyls which used to attack crocks a few thousand years ago.
On another note how far down do the irukandji travel. They seem to be heading further south on the west coast along with crocs yet the gw seem to be getting further north

Crocodiles have been found as far down as the Gold Coast

Mackay is really the start of the winter trade wind. Plenty days of consistent 15-20 knots. Big kites are the go and the water clears up real nice. Here's a quick vid from last winter season.

No jellies during winter months in FNQ. 4 Mile Beach has a lot of kiting and swimming. I have seen no crocs there nor heard of any. Idiot drivers on the roads would be more of a hazard I reckon.

Crocs hang round in and near river mouths so care is required if doing a downwinder past one - better to stay a bit out to sea.

Thanks for all of the info!!! It seems the further north on the east coast the better.
