Hey guys
with this outbreak of stormy weather, big swells and gusty South Westerlys,
has anyone been kiting since last Friday?

Where can you kite in weather and winds like this? Boat Harbour?

Cheers

Boat harbour. Gusty but doable.

Sans Souci is possible but HEAPS gusty. Its a bit sketchy cause if you go too far downwind you will find a huge wind shadow and your kite will fall out of the sky.
3ft waves have been pushing through the heads and been making some awesome cross-off wave riding at Dolls. Richy and a few others are out now making the most of the waves. Lit on 9's and 11's.
Sucks to be working

Personally I think Boaty's the safest and best place in Sydney in a SW. It's rarely crowded as I guess no one likes the drive.

Saturday was magic there, I arrived at 8am and had to give up by 3pm when I was too knackered to carry on. I was on a 12m the whole day, awesome fun for a westerly.

Umina is an hour and 30 mins North of Sydney but it is excellent. Was there last Friday and had both waves at main section of beach and flat water at the river mouth. Beach is very wide and safe and not busy. On Friday I kited in a fairly clean 25-30 knots for 5 hours and saw only 3 other kiters arrive. For people living on the Northern beaches it is the same driving time as going down to Boaties but without the $15 4WD park charge.

Glad you had a good time Trant. I had to work to make up for taking Friday off. Was worth it.

Hey Guys,

The best place to kite a S'Wester in Sydney is Wanda/Greenhills, bugger Boat Harbour, it's kinda onshore there. Wanda/Greenhills is wicked,[}:)] especially with a swell and there's no need to go to the 4WD park and shell out ya dough.

You've got a good chance of being killed on the beach at Boat Harbour, especially on the weekend by the F-wits that drive the beaches with Jetskis in tow doing 100kmh + in their 4WD's.

Boat Harbour does have it's moments and if you really want to kite there in a S'Wester, you can rig at Wanda and kite across, it'll take you about 10 minutes across Broken Bay.

For those that don't know the location, it is the last strip of sandy beach before the rocky point you can see from Wanda Surf Club when looking North. When there is a swell running you can see the Merries Reefs just off the point (there are 5 in all which break depending upon how big the swell is).

Boat Harbour itself is the small inlet/harbour just to the North around the Point and is excellent for fishing and snorkeling. The spot you kite is inside Merries reefs off the beach and is protected from the swell by the reefs, you get a small fat wave the further you kite around towards Wanda where it can be really big and fun (mind the Shorey!.

Have fun!

Umina is a an awesome spot, probably the best around Sydney when it's really working well.

I believe it only really works in a SSW to SE though, and much more West in it and it starts to become super gusty. I think some of the guys got caught out on Saturday trying it and it wasn't working.

Glad you had a good time on Friday though Tony, would have to have been there!

hey john thanks for letting me borrow the kite. the leash is in the bottom zip bit. i had no control of that thing i was taking some HUGE beatings out there hey hehehe. yeh umina is the best spot. i have been staying in sydney lately and have rode at longreef, collaroy, newport, boatharbour wanda/cronulla and kurnell(in crap wind for 2 minutes)and nowhere even comes close to umina(but i guess im byest). instead of driving up there from sydney which takes for ever you can get the ferry over from palm beach which takes around 20 minutes and comes in near kitebeach. We are planning a downwinder from palm beach to umina soon in a big swell and on the way were gonna jump up and grind the ferry yeeeuuuuw!!! anyone interested??????

No worries, glad you could get out. Sorry for the poor quality of it though, it's my only kite smaller than 12m and even I don't like using it.

Yeah, I saw a couple of them :oO
I tried a downloop earlier and still have marks on my forehead from where I hit the water a tad too hard for my liking.

Sounds stupid so count me in, I'm game for that. Maybe get someone on the ferry to film your grinding on the way over ;o)

You can do Long Reef in a sou'wester -- believe it or not (look at a map) it's exactly the same directional orientation at Boat Harbour. As long as it's not WSW you're fine there. And, there are waves!
