I've got a 5'6" surfboard into which I am keen to sink some plugs for footstraps. I was curious how far across the board to sink the plugs. Some of the current wave boards like the North Rocketfish have them placed right along the middle for easy riding in both directions but for my board this would mean chewing up the stringerline which can't be good for it.

Should I have the straps alinged with length of board just off to one side, or angled in with a plug either side?

I suppose this also depends how I would ride the board. Do most wave riders gybe and switch feet when changing direction or do they just come back toe-side? - Ben

Riding back to the zone toe-side looks soooo retarded.
Screw on 3 straps and gybe like a man.

Hey Waveslave,

Is how you look to others more important than how you ride?

Hey Full.contact,

Try riding strapless first off and take note of where your feet are when you are comfortably powered, this should be the rough indication of the positioning for your straps and plugs.

Back strap is usually straight and front is either straight or slightly biased to your natural or goofy stance which ever you prefer. Don't cut into your stringer, just place inserts either side of the stringer and epoxy glue them to the stringer for added support and strength.

Most wide footstraps have allowances for either twin screw setups or single. Single is most common Screw either side of the stringer for straight and use twin screws or just use a slight heelside bias or slight diagonal bias for the front strap and go single, just dont exagerate the angle too much or it will be painful for your foot to ride opposite tack when you gybe.

The other alternative is to go with Youngy's theory and place the front strap across the board at 90 degrees to the stringer then it doesn't matter either way and you wont ruin your stringer.

Chopping or grinding your stringer will result in a broken board in the not too distant future.

Good luck and go with what feels right for you, after all, it is you that will be riding it!

Good winds,

Hey guys, we have just got our first shipment of stick on pads from NSI. These are cool, just like Gorilla grip but with built in inserts, retail for $139 and available from ARSA only. Wholesale enquiries are welcome.

simple and can take straps off and use for normal surfboard if you like.

Yes and No.

Hey Kitehard,
I'm guessing you ride back to the zone toe-side and fragile.
I'm giving you 2 years before you suffer from a twisted bowel.

Slave' how about you unhook and grow some balls!

See not good judging people on their riding style, people can ride which ever way they want. Some people might be of the opinion that gybing is "retarded" and riding preistoric 3 strap boards. Some people may think your gutless for not going strapless.

Point being everyone can ride how they like and its not your place to pass judgement on how they choose too. Everyone has different opinions...

hahahah
Just mention the word 'gybe' and a poley will come out of the woodwork.
They understand.
Cheers Nebbian.

But heel-carve gybes on a twin-tip look like an illusion to them.
They think it's magic.

haha
Those people who believe gybing is retarded are probably down-winder freaks.
The car-shuffle crew.
Now on a different tack;
3 straps on a board doesn't make it prehistoric....
An outdated shape and a spongey brown core will relegate the board to the kitesurfing museum.

For your information I dont use a seat harness, some people may have goods to protect down below deck.

Yeah, I better keep the stringer!
Youngy's theory hey? That sounds like a good option and if it means I have to gybe like a poleboarder then so be it

Hey full.contact,

Good on ya mate, nothing wrong with gybing like a poley. I reckon a symetrical setup is best, it then gives you the option to either stay toeside or to gybe if you want.

I tend to stay toeside when I want to ride a wave in then smack a few little waves on the way back out. If I am chasing ground back upwind, I gybe and ride heelside both tacks. My board is symetrical in line straps (two only).

If you have never done the "poleboard shuffle", (gybing) it will take you a bit of practice but it isn't that hard, especially if you have a widish board. Make sure you have some wax on the deck between the front and back deck pads so you don't slip whilst shuffling.

Good winds and have fun!

i need to replace the cheap straps on my board as they are ripping the skin off my toes they are so hard and rough!

can anyone recommend good, soft, flexible straps for the surf?
