You lucky bastard. I was there im May 2000, pre kiting days tragically, as the wind was pretty much 12-25 kts the whole week. Water temps about 27degrees.

Whitehaven beach has been featured in 'Free sail' magazine [before their primarily windsurfing readers got their collective noses out of joint and they dropped the kiting]. It is definitely the spot to head. It is Cross onshore to the SE trades and about 5ks long there small [it is inside the barrier reef] sand bar waves about a km out off the rivermouth. The best anchorage is just inside a headland on the southern end but there is another anchorage in a bay around from the northern end [forget what its called] and you can walk over to Whitehaven across a narrow isthmus. I didnt see much else that was exciting for a jkiter but there are a few very small islands with possible launches onto flat water. The bigger islands are very high and leave gusty winds for a long distance in their lee.

Good kiting

Yeah my olds have got a cat up there and I have been kiteboarding heaps.

You're are pretty much going at the right time. As Niall said the trades are from the SE to ESE and vary from between 15 and 33kts. The inlet that Niall's is talking about is called Hill Inlet and it is absolutely amazing for kiting. You won't believe it till you see it!!
(just be aware of the little sting rays, cos I got done once....ooouch!! They aren't usually a problem though)

There is also another spot called Langford reef which is just across from Hayman Island. It is basically a reef out-crop from a small un-inhabited island nearby. Only good though on mid to low tide.

There are also a few locals that have a few spots around Long Island and Daydream Island that they kite from. Meant to be good but I haven't been there. The guy who run the water sports at Daydream Island is named Steve and he is a nice guy. He should be able to help you and probably knows the most about the area.

My first kiting experience up there was throwing the 2 line Wipika FreeAir into the water off the back of the boat, un-winding my lines and water launching....Memories!!

p.s. The reason I say 15 to 33kts is because 33kts is always the forecast. If they forecast over 33kts all the charter boats have to be called in which means they don't make as much money.
