Only place worth going this time of year (June - August) is far north Queensland. Cairns, Port Douglas and surrounds. It's warm, good wind, no ocean stingers. Great kiting.

To be honest no, I am really wondering whether I can kite then. I am new and thought in winter times there will actually be less people in the water so if I do something wrong I cannot hurt anyone else.

I assume by your answer that this was probably a stupid question? If it is because of cold water, then I do not really mind, but will the wind conditions be safe and allow me to kite?

If you lack confidence to kite with others in summer then you certainly should not kite alone in winter. Winter winds are typically stronger and gustier so you really want to have your sh!t reasonably well together. If in doubt, don't.

If you do want to kite through winter, I suggest plenty of fitness work in between sessions.

If I can only practice my body drags I will be happy. I will obviously choose the calmer days, I have a massive 12m kite so will stick to the sub 20knot winds...

In winter we tend not to get many sub-20kn days that are kiteable. The only days that are worth while are the 20-25kn+ northerlies which mean that the southern end of the bay is on. Even then you'll need a small kite, thick wetsuit and some decently firm gonads as when it does come in it can do some fairly crazy things. Swinging offshore in a matter of minutes, massive squalls before completely dropping out, and constant gusts of 5-10 or even 15kn.

All the enthusiastic nutters will be out when a winter northerly does hit as we've been sitting indoors pining for a session, which means you'll have to do a fair bit of dodging psycho's pulling kiteloops without much recent practice. ;)
Not trying to discourage you, just letting you know the potential hazards and dangers which you'll probably discover and run into almost every winter session.
