Directly cross shore for me is great, because your kite can just drift down the line, while you ride the wave, and you don't have to move it.
Directly on-shore is also great because you can ride at 90 degrees to the wind and be moving straight down the line of the wave, and not shift your kite much.
Cross-on I find is good, but not as good because there is more work to do with the kite (and who like work eh?).
But that's just me.
