Due to declining tourism numbers there are some rumours that 'windsurfer beach' may become 'kite beach' in good old Lano. Local business people have noticed an extended decline in general tourism numbers in an area that had for decades 'punched above its weight' in tourism terms due to the exceptional wind and wave conditions.

Some thoughts are that Lancelin is simply seen as a windsurfing destination, is not kite friendly and that all the young people are getting into kiting whilst windsurfing has very much plateaued.

A source close to the issue commented 'windsurfing has been good to Lancelin for a long, long time, but we need to keep our options open for the future, peoples livelihoods are at stake'.

Read into that what you may, it would be great to see a positive outcome for kiting rather that all this talk of banning the sport.

Great to hear some people are actually trying to get us to their beaches instead of trying to get us to leave them. It would be great if more places followed this example.

Guys,
that may be good for kiters in the short term but not good for watersprorts overall, and a sad indictment on all of us that we can't all co-operate and get along together.

what happens when the next big thing in watersports comes along and kiters get squeezed out for the sake of the next "fad" to n hit the beaches ??

Wouldn't you think that rather than banning windsurfing they should just unban kiteboarding? Might be a bit dangerous for kite lines if old mate was still allowed near them.

that sign at lancelin is a joke anyway.. there is no solid boundary set to how far out you must be before you can kite between the two sets of poles on the beach anyway.. its a load of sh!t.. shouldnt a sign saying something is banned have the shire or council logo on it indicating its authenticity..

i got told off for kiting past those poles once in a marginal day where as soon as i got past them il walk up the beach.. the ranger said thers a $100 fine for kiters past the mark.. i asked how far out we have to be before we can go past there again and he said he doesnt know.. n he thinks its past the breakers... stupid sh!t inconsitency and imo its a load of crap.

its not the ban on the ****ty little strip in front of the showers that's only any good for coming in that makes kiting in Lanno unattractive its the aggressive poles that have spent years forcing their way over the other poles to become top dog and see the kiters as a threat to their egos. it only takes one to start abusing kiters to give them all the ****er tag and segregation to occur.
Even in Perth i have been abused by poles at my local, it was by a euro %#%# and whats more is i was being very obliging even giving up my waves for them as i could catch any one i wanted but they were limited by the wind.

for pricks that are obsessive about rules and right of way they should really learn starboard tack has right of way .. and upwind too.. and that gybing towards kiters is silly as i will make sure he comes off second best

it is good fun giving them shti n burnin away from the slow basterds tho

All the motorized idiots at Lano and Wedge are going to be banned first I would hope....sorry, but a real sad crowd, the new mining rich motoring families...bikes, scooters, dune buggies you name it...........morons bringing up the next generation of morons.

Sorry, I just don't see anything positive about putting kiddies on these "toys" and this is called having sporting fun.

I must admit I have only had one disagreement with a poley and that was him calling starboard on me when he had no idea...

But this whole poley vs kiters thing is a lot like the ski vs snowboard debate. Being a snowboarder (but I can ski) sometimes you get guys who don't understand the downhill physics of a snowboard. The best fall lines for a board and skis are quite different.

With respect to Lancellin I got stuck out there one day and had to fight back through the weed to get back on shore. If you are kiting in the area of the windsurf beach then that's not really where you want to be anyway. You can see two parallel rows of buoys that extend off the beach to mark out a lane for the poleys.

Just remember that when snowboarding came out, the new edge design and shape of the boards flowed onto ski design, and now skiing is taking the boundaries that were extended by snowboarders and pushing them further. Don't be surprised if in a couple of years Windsurfing starts to build on to what kiters have done. I haven't seen it myself, but maybe we will see poleys doing kickers and rails in the not too distant future!

Lanno has been a known windsurfing spot forever. We don't have to kite right out the front on windsurfers beach. We can go to either point to launch (we are basically given an area-isn't that what we are all after?) and then go kite out at the breaks. Leave that 100m of grass area for the windsurfers.
Banning kites from the grass area is a good idea. It is not that big, and only a few rigged kites would take up a lot of room. There are families that sit there and it isn't safe. The point 100m south is more than adequate.
Windsurfing won't be banned there, I would be amazed if it was.
Gruezi is right. It the car/bike people up there that are the real problem. It is uncommon for noone to come with 20m of our car on the beach at 100km/hr+. Either on a bike or in a car.

I was up at wedge on the weekend and the vibe sucked...red necks with maxxed out cc's,

You would think that with the brand new patrol for dad, the jet ski for the daughter, the dirt bike for the boy and the 4 wheeler for the mum you would think they would be happy but the werent, now one would give way on the beach or the track. Heaps of dirty looks and way to much posing...

Some group took up the whole farkin' beach. With their dirt bikes, jetskis and 4WD's

Saw some funny **** though..a guy with a brand new parol+ boat stuck up the top of a dune, wtf was he thinking. A 3WD mitsi express fanging it down Beacon track and many rolled luxess.

There is nothing wrong with the setup we currently have at Lano. Kiters are allowed to pump up at the little pole-dancer park, just not launch or land there. I'm fine with that and think it should stay that way. The wind is way to gusty there for a kite to launch/land safely and the park normally has a few families BBQ'ing. It only takes 3 min to walk up the beach to launch and once your on the water you can go where ever you want!

What i believe will happen in the future is north beach will be developed into a new park, similar to the pole-dancer park, for kitesurfers. The plan was to plant a lot of grass and install a shower and shade. I lived in Lano last year and that was the word from a few of the locals. North beach is a pretty good spot; flat, deep water and those that are keen can upwind to south passage.

If Lano does anything i hope they do this!!!

For people who are into wave riding try mini teahupoo behind lancelin island, me and my bro and some mates went out for a paddle round there, farrrrrr king long paddle and a Bull Sealion tried to maul us, but it was dead quiet, nice sets and good weather allround for Ksurfing. I doubt you'd have trouble with seals on a Ksurfer, just loop out of the way i guess?
