I use an unsealed 2/3mm steamer. Basically the cheapest one I could buy. I never get cold in it kiting because you are always moving around and are normally out of the water. If get a little cold in it surfing as you're still for longer periods of time.

The only issue I have is the legs filling with water. You can fix this with ankle straps of some kind. I've never bothered to work this out, and buying a wetty with them inbuilt is normally $$$.

i find that with the ankle straps or what ever you use
if your wetty lets in water from you neck opening it goes down to the ankles and you cant get it out.
I was thinking brands should put water tight velcro straps on the steamers
that would be useful

I think (with kiting anyway), the water comes from the wash off the board and up through your ankles. Mystic has one that (the one Lenten advertises) has ankle fastentings. But the wetsuit is pretty expensive I think. Lots more than your $150 cheapie that works just as good for everything else.

The water temperature is not that hugely different from summer to winter. The air temperature and the wind-chill is more important. Your bodily constitution is also important: some cools down quickly, and some walks bare foot in the snow. What you need to consider is that cold muscles are less responsive, more prone to injury, and utilize more energy for contractions. .........but, again, it is quite individual......
Hope it helps

Got a Flying objects wetty, cheap, buil in leg straps, chest fur, fully sealed and designed to be worn with a harness.

with the water getting trapped above the straps I find this happens on older suits with looser necks after a rinse cycle in the waves or fast headfirst dismount. I punched 2 small round holes above the leg straps and reinforced the holes with spuerglue and strong thread, auto drain :)

Hey peeps,

I wear a West 2 x 2mm short leg long arms. My Secret is to wear my micro fibre short arm Ozone rashie underneath it. Oh so warm!

No steamer means no michelin man legs, and boardies over the top look OK.

It's all about freedom of movement, I don't like steamers for kiting. They're OK for surfing and diving though.

Just my 2 cents worth, keep the change
