I am sure i am not exaggerating when I say that the post Christmas period has been the worst I can remember since moving to WA 14 years ago.

There are no highs in the indian ocean just endless troughs with the high in the bight and the 'Pilbara low' sitting out west of carnarvon, a situation exemplified by the southward track of the recent cyclone Nicholas.

When we do get a seabreeze it is back to easterlies after just one day instead of a 4-5 day cycle.

Kitestock scored a really lucky window.

BOM blames a warmer than usual indian ocean as part of 'El Nina', but oceanographers report that the rate of warming on the eastern indian ocean is the one of the fastest in the planet, with the phenomena of southward migration of giant herring to the swan and mud crabs to Albany.

Is this the end of the westcoast seabreeze?
Should we all be moving to Esperance [that place cranks in these conditions] ?
Or taking up stand up paddle boarding?
Or dusting off the twin tips and going back to Flatwater on the river?

I am desperate for some excitement, all suggestions will be considered.

Heard somewhere hottest in 16 yrs., do luv Esp. though, they have had best season in memory this year.

Little sea breeze trying now, but you might as well go swimming or play golf atm. I'de use the river when you get a chance. Had a lovely one this am for about 1hr, just chill riding with the birds, not very exciting I know, but nice none the less.

This is only my 3rd season (out of 4 yrs-one yr off due to injury) but I'd agree for sure.

Post chrissy has been soooooo ordinary. Even on days with breeze it's been frustratingly yo-yoing up n down. Not wrong about the lack of consecutive days either - p!ss-poor!!!

I can't remember SB or the BOM being so consistantly wrong?! Not slightly either, more like 20+kt predictions and a complete no-show for the SWester. Weird. Make like a crab and shuffle down south I reckon.

Still we have beautiful beaches, hotty chicks, great parks and clean air... As for excitement (without a SW) you are in the wrong state mate.

Hasn't been as bad as some of you make out, the riding is still there to be done. Been pletny of point walter sessions to be had, could be done almost every morning at the moment, not to mention last arvo and this arvo looks like a late breeze'. I would say still 5 out of 7 days riding if you want.

Niall,
The season isn't over until it's over.
November was good, remember ?
Sometimes the tail-end can be fertile with fresh southerlys and nice swell.
Kitejam and Kitestock were very fortunate.
KX might be lucky too.

Nov was good
Dec was great
Jan was great....i had a whole week where i kited every day.
Kitestock in Feb rocked
and now its the easterlies which suck.

What there has been a distinct lack of since about October is swell. Even down south has been flat. Where are the waves?

Is it just me or were people saying the exact same thing last year? And I seem to recall it the year before...

My comparison is that last season I spent one windy day not kiting, because I was so kited out I just couldn't move even though the wind was cranking outside. I just lay on the lounge watching DVDs, feeling sore and pretending I wasn't letting good wind go to waste. This season I had two windy days without kiting because I was simply broken and could kite no more. If everything else was equal (which it isn't) that would mean this season was windier than last.

I also learnt about 2-3 new moves this season, same as last season, so I couldn't call it 'worse'.

I have only spent two and a half seasons in Perth though, so might not have the 14 year perspective, but I still don't think it's as bad as you make out.

Hey Rellie, I know where the waves are too, they are on the winter NWesterlies coming up, and even bigger down in Margs. I see a wintery and wine sodden weekend one day in the not too distant future with some full wetsuits, big wind and waves involved, does that strike any kind of chord with you?

Food for thought.

Yes its been crap.

Managed to get a new quiver of kites for the first time (previously managed with second hand) and managed to get Legionnaire's disease and spent two weeks in hospital over Christmas.

By the time I recovered enough to go kiting, there has been fark all wind.

Farken fantastic

PS wear a dust mask when handling potting mix!!!

So if winds increase because of Greenhouse caused instability, will this mean ocean temps will decrease?

You guys really need to get some distance to it all. I know exactlly what you mean though. During the 4 seasons I spent in Chamonix skiing every season got worse than the previous one, less snow and worse weather. There was still snow, just not as much and if it's wasn't great conditions and sunny most of us hardcore skibums (part-time alcoholics) didn't even bother going up on the mountain.

Pretty much the same here. "We" (mostly you guys, I'm still new here) have been spoiled for such a long time and as soon as it's not epic conditions every single day of the season everyone gets a bit stingy Go anywhere else in the world, even over east, and try out there season for a year and you'll get newfound appreciation for our terrific conditions here

Having said that, I would kill for the conditions we had in january. I remember I almost got tired of kiting for a bit. PERFECT conditions every single day, hands all torn up and blistered and legs and arms feeling the pain. Wouldn't mind that feeling again...

Hang in there guys, things will turn around!

Nobody is suggesting Perth has had the worst season around the country. However Perth is fairly renown as one of the best locations and it simply has died in the @rse post chrissy. Well actually there was 2 weeks of crankin wind but patchy as all hell otherwise.

In previous seasons witn less experience i found the average breeze easier to ride (more steady) and had better luck with selecting the days I went out.

I only get a couple of cracks at it each week so generally plan my week around the 3-4 day forecast. Yeh wifey really loves that. Last year I rarely missed out on this modus op. This year it's like swiss cheese mate - holes everywhere!!

If youv'e got the time ala GreenPatster to go everyday no doubt youve had a fair few seshs but if you have relied on the forcast it has been good grief Charlie Brown...

I don't think it is a case of short memory at all. The predictions weren't always spot on last year but more like 80%-ish this year more like 60% at best.

Hey Loz care to run the numbers on days the SB prediction was 5+ kts shy of the mark last year and this year?? Well c'mon mate all the nasty trolls and flamers have been dealt with so what are you doing with your time??? Not kiting obviously!!

Anyhoo everyone cross ya fingers, toes, scroties, knockers or whatever it takes to get some (stable) wind this weekend!!

What time? I can only kite when I'm in Perth, which is less than half the time with FIFO from the mines. I work something like 8 days on 6 days off, so it's not all peaches and cream. I must have just lined up all the good days on my breaks.

Speaking of flying out though, I'm back in Perth tonight in time for the light wind forecast for tomorrow. An excellent opportunity to try out my new Flysurfer 17m Psycho 3 .

Yo Pat. Yeh, I meant that when in town you can check the beach everyday so your hit/miss ratio in a 6 day window is up there.

Sumpin tells me you are never going to regret that 17m purchase mate.

I've got a shockin lurgy (blocked it out last night to focus on whimpy breeze) but would be keen for downwinder as long as I haven't coughed up both lungs.

I did get out on my 15.5m and 151cm desperado light wind kit last night. Was the closest thing to a decent sesh for 3+weeks for me. Not really jumping (don't think the other 4 riders were either) but nice to just be cruising. Feel like the good/bad ratio in the world has regained some balance at least!!

Oh BTW my olde 2003 15.5m Flow, now it has been sown up as 5th line, relaunched waaaaaaayyyyyy easier (didn't really relaunch much at all before). I'd recomend getting a 5th on old biggies to any fellow light wind tragics.

The easiest way for Laurie to work out when there's no wind is by checking his "hits" for the day. The days with the most "hits" must surely stand out like sore thumbs.

As for a cr@p season, where i used to live, edinburgh, we called 20 sessions in an entire year a GOOD season.

I get more than that in the so called off season(winter) and then this summer have kited so much that my brand new kite needs a major service.

There's kiting in "perfect" conditions, steady 27knots seabreeze in head high waves which i agree we haven't had heaps of, but there have been loads of so called non-perfect(or east coast) conditions for most of the summer.

Having just moved across from Nth Qld, where i was lucky to get a dozen "good" sessions in a year, i have found the Nth West (Exmouth area) to be epic. I dont want to exagerate how many sensational 20-30 Kts sessions weve had here in the last six months since i got here in September but honestly there has been a lot more days over 20 Kts (my min for going out) than less than 20 Kts and in Nov and Dec nearly every day was good, throw in some swell in Sept/Oct and guess what youve got, paradise my friends!!!

I didn't kite much this season but the few times I went out, it just didn't feel like the nice smooth seabreeze that Perth is used to.

It was mostly like winter weather I thought. Even the wind stayed a bit cool this year. I must be getting old.

This season I have had 2 7day kite sprees. One late last year, one in january. But february has crapped itself.
Maybe 6-7 kites tops on the seabreeze. At the moment my hands are silky smooth, and I have no problem holding my arms above my waist
Weekend is looking ok....ish.
