Would you attend a free information session on how you could assist in the rescue of a injured or unconscious kiter?

Reading this thread www.seabreeze.com.au/forums/Kitesurfing/General/injured-or-unconscious-kiter-how-to-help/?page=2 got me thinking.

As a member of Trigg surf life saving club and a kiter, I spoke with the head of education about running a free session for interested kiters about what to do in this and other accidents involving kiters and other members of the public given we are about to restart the new kite season.

So now we are just trying to see if there is interest from WA kiters, Kite Shops, WA Kitesurfing association in attending a session at Trigg Surf Club where educators can run through first aid / resuscitation techniques that may assist on the kind of accident we may come across.

From the perspective of the club, a lot of kiters use Trigg for triangles or to land from their winders so this is about risk management / management. Additionally, kiters have been know to assist swimmers caught in rips so can also be a resource in unpatrolled beaches.

The more interested parties the better as real life situations can be discussed.

It has been proposed to do this on a Friday afternoon / evening, at no charge. There would be no qualification issued but the bar would be open to attendees once we wrap up and the drinks are really well priced.

Would love to get a sense of the interest for this to see if it's something we should hit the button on.

Stay safe people and have a great season.

Steve, if he has some scenarios and background, get him to PM as sound like would be good to put it all together...

the club rooms are a great venue for this.

Had thought about raising something like this with Coogee SLSC, being my local - great idea, I'd definitely be keen.

Great news, pilot Pete's west Australia's offshore specialist has jumped onboard.
He's doing an advanced course on deep offshore pack downs and how to dodge sea rescue boats

Those interested need a bronze medallion
A helmet and a decent life policy or lawyer

Hi this is an excellent idea and I would be happy to attend and to spread the word to other kiters and try to get as many people involved as possible.

With the sheer number of kiters along this stretch in the summer and the fact the WA government is starting to introduce regulations into kiting it is important that we take our own safety initiatives and show that we are keen to work with groups such as the surf life savers

As well as covering rescue procedures we should also look at General conduct specifically what not to do on a crowded public beach. If we take no action and simply let each one do what they want and don't try to stop the few with reckless behaviour then I believe we are just around the corner from some much heavier regulation.

Thank you to everyone that has contacted me privately or here to express your interest.

I have spoken with WAKSA today about also incorporating information specifically around best practice in rescue techniques which has been developed over the past years and shared with Freo Sea Rescue and Fro surf club as well.

We will tighten up a format, time and date and will post details here and ask others to share out through their networks.

Would be awesome if it coincided with a seabreeze before hand, but to make the most of the opportunity offered from the TISLSC I suspect we will run the whole session in the club rooms and not on the beach on this occasion.

Please PM if you think you have anything to add.

May also be great if someone was set up to film the session as we could then share what is discussed and presented to those that couldn't make it or who live too far away.

Happy kiting everyone

Hi everyone with an interest,

The planets have aligned and we have booked the Hall at the Trigg Island SLSC club rooms for Friday 16th October at 5.30pm.

The format is going to be a quick presentation from WAKSA on recommended rescue techniques and strategies and then David Reid from the surf club who runs the paramedics course for Western Australia is going to discuss first aid responses for life threatening kite related incidents.

We'll have some mannequins to play with so if you haven't had a chance to pump a chest recently, its a great way to get a sense of timing and required pressure fo chest compressions.

The bar will also be open from 6pm so hopefully we get some wind and can have a kite first then come up off the beach for the info session / discussion and a few beers.

There will be no charge for attendance.

Please save the date in your diary if you are interested and I'll rekindle this post and maybe ask Laurie to send out an email blast just prior.

If any kite shops coming along wanted to bring down some line cutting knives to sell on the night you would be more than welcome.

Anything else I may have missed, PM me.
