Well, two days ago (only posting it now as we had no internet up there) I decided to kite Fingal Bay in a S/SE/ESE and had an awesome time, despite my board deciding to bend and break right below my right footpad. It hasn't snapped into two seperate peices, I'm just guessing that the wood inside (woops if its not wood core) has given way which has created a white stress/bend mark across the deck of the board. Obviously I'm not going to ride it anymore because I don't want to damage it any further.

The board is the Slingshot SX 147, loved every second of it, until SNAP. I called the store and they say that boards DO have a warranty, my board being only 5 months old and only started being taken out on the water 2 months after I bought it. However I'm unsure whether the board breaking under my feet as I did a turn counts as a manufacturer defect. I didnt do any hard landings or anything really as this was my first season anyway... it just broke on a hard carve.

Is it possible to repair?

Fairly gutted as it cost me $800 new and I don't have any more money lying around courtesy of my kiting gear! , still wouldnt hesitate to go into debt for a new one though

If it broke during "normal use" it should definitely be a warranty replacement because it means the board was not suitable to be used for the purpose for which it was advertised or sold.
If it broke because you jumped on it while it was on the sand, or drove your car over it then this is clearly not covered by the warranty because that is not what the board was designed, advertised or sold for.

Part of the "manufacturing" includes the design process, so if it the design is faulty and that results in the board breaking, then that should be covered by the warranty.
This question comes up in the auto industry quite often and design defects usually result in a recall or free repair at the next service.

Thanks,

I better take it into the store tommorow, I wasn't too sure if 'manufaturer defects' excluded damage occuring from use, but the way you've put it makes sense, also if it did that would mean that a board snapping the first day you use it would mean no warranty... on expensive board, that would mean I'd never jump again lol.

It's very evident that the wood has just given way right beneath the footpad, always looked after it and it's pretty spotless other than the big white line across the deck.

My pocket might hurt less than I thought

Yes it's possible. My 1st real board was a 04 or 05 sx which had a similar break. A massive fracture from rail to rail. I got it for nothing and fixed myself. But to do so u need 2 get messy with epoxy and glass.

Providing the hull or base of the board is still ok u need 2 cut a "v" shape into the deck where the fracture is. If u cut say 10mm deep u need the top of the "v" to be 30mm across. ( Standard fibreglass repair ratio. ) The filler i used was q cells which they use in surfboard repairs but if u can use a little bit of foam or balsa as well, it'll save u some weight. Finally i sealed the repair with 2 layers of carbon fibre tape and epoxy resin. Thin stip 1st followed by a thicker strip. Carbon is a stiff fibre and epoxy pretty much sticks to anything. The board is still alive today and was used at a cable park once or twice, so the repair has held. Hope this helps and PM me if u have any questions

Well, if I'm unable to get a new one on warranty then I'll definantly be interested in fixing it up . I'll keep you posted on what happens when I go in.

Hey dude..
i gotta see this.. i dunno how easy it will be to repair. If it hasnt cracked yet then it will probably be harder to fix.. it wont ever be as strong and will is no real way to re-enforce it without changing it dramatically..

How surprising that
1) A piece of brand spanking new Slingshot equipment broke
2) That Slingshot showed no interest in replacing it under warranty, blaming the rider rather then realising that there gear is of poor quality

Another reason for me to never buy Slingshot again.

Note:
I have now put my flamesuit for protection from all the SS people out there.

I just suggested the board can be fixed which any board can to an extent. But u need time and the materials. When I fixed the old sx I was on a piss weak wage and couldn't afford a good board. And due to the fact those boards had no flex and binding were bolted on the board, it felt no different in the water anyway. That board cost me 70 bucks 4 the materials in that repair as oppose 2 500 for the second board. Sounds economical to me. But I still think that board of jimmyz should be covered by warrantee.

Mmmm interesting topic, I just cracked a board that is less than 3 months old, wouldn't of had more than about 8-10 hours of use and has hardly been jumped.
(Long story but I happened to buy two boards on the same day and I mainly use the other one especially when jumping).
It is a strange crack as it is lengthwise down the board and most boards that I have seen break seem to break across from rail to rail.
I believe it was some kind of manufacturing fault and am hoping to get it replaced under warranty.

Well, good news! I took my board into the shop today. They had a look at it and said that it would 'likely' be replaced by slingshot. I think I was fairly lucky because only the core seems to have broken, all the other layers are still fine, so its easier to see that its likely a defect, and that I didn't throw it off a building or whatever.

Although I haven't yet got confirmation that I'm 100% covered and am waiting for a call from the store, I think it should be alright so I'm fairly happy right now, I wasn't even expecting there to be a warranty when I first broke it, coming from surfing beforehand... no warranties when your board snaps then .

Huh? Sorry maybe I didn't make it clear enough, at that point in the post (so my first two posts) I had not yet contacted slingshot. They didn't blame me for the broken board. I can't really refute your other statement though, wasn't expecting such a new board to break so fast, but I must say, it was an awesome board while it lasted.

yet another in the loong looong list of hunter valley EX-slingshot customers....hey SS guys don't you see a pattern forming here?
Customers that don't come back tell others about their bad experiences....

If these guys only knew how much money they were loosing because of how they treat people?!

hey mate...definitely take it baCK to ss and then post their response on here.

if we can get enough people together maybe we can get a class action against them in the dept of fair trading.

You probably can tell that i've had a somewhat negative experience too.....nooooo, not possible.

Yep sorted, replaced free of charge = 1 happy customer.
Just hope I have more luck with this one because I love riding this board and by the way mine isn't a Slingshot.

Well I've had only good experiences with Slingshot. But I think it has a lot to do with the shop you buy your gear from.

The 2 shops I buy gear from know me by face and name so with my warranty jobs I didnt even need to produce a reciept. They got straight onto Slingshot and within the day it was sorted and my gear was sent off for repair/replacement.

I had some friday arvo stitching on the LE of an early model Rev. It was to be repaired but ended up being replaced. Plus they chucked in a few free stickers for my postage cost.

Got my replacement board today its a shiney new 08 SX 148. Apparently the guys at the store had no problems getting Slingshot to replace my broken board for me .

So happy right now, things turned out far better than I'd expected when I first broke it.

Oh and the 08 boards now have full woodcore, which I guessed due to the added weight, but this probably means this one shall last a lot longer .

Good on ya SS
