Hey,
I am gonna be passing through yeppoon this weekend, and forecast
looks promising, so was thinking of chucking my kite gear in the car.
However wind looks like its gonna be a southerly, so just wondering if
Yeppoon works in a southerly or is it too protected, and also wondering
Anyone else is planning on headin out.

Drive the coast road south to Emu Park (about 20k) then keep going to Zilzie side beach. Beach faces south and is good as long as it is not the top of a big tide. Check it out on Google Maps. A couple of local lads live one street away and will be kiting if it is windy. I have to work or I would give it a crack. Good luck.

thanks for the info gdog,
will definitely check out.
do u get a bit of windswell through there with southerly direction and so does anybody ride surfboards in it or just twin tips?
have paddle surfed farny (or whatever it is called) before, but was a few years ago now and they were just party waves at best. Actually think it might have been a bit of a fluke in timing as don't believe you guys get to much in the way of waves.

Definitely avoid Yeppoon Main Beach on a southerly, it's far too protected and you'll end up in the swimmers area if anything goes wrong.. Also avoid kemp beach(surfers domain and a bad combo of not a lot of beach and a lot of big trees).
Almost every other beach is fine, might see you out at some point!

Not real surf at Zilzie but more like slash swell. Better the closer you get to the mouth of Cooraman Ck but still not classic swell. Still heaps of fun though with plenty of launching ramps or flatter water in the shallows. In regards to surfing waves north of Bangalee can actually be very good, you get away from the Kepple Islands and get proper swell when it is on, it is called big Dunes.
