Thats exactly the problem.
No one wants to earn 6$ an hour for 4 years doing a **** job.
So there aren't many skilled people around. What does that do? Forces up the wage rates of skilled people.
Electricians earning 100k a year is a joke.
Plenty of trades will work for 4 years on ** pay, because they aren't so narrow minded that they can't see the big picture...it sucks earning no money at first...it sucks sharing accomodation in delapidated housing, it sucks eating 2 minute noodles for weeks on end - but in the end you get there, and you end up getting rewarded with a great lifestyle.
trades are only earning 100k a year due to a lack of skilled labour...true.
there is a lack of skilled labour because too many people won't start on a poor minimum wage...true
So lets take your approach then, and go on the dole, because it pays better. No new apprentices means that the few skilled workers will charge you even more (luckily, because there will be thousands more like yourself on the dole to support) and the situation gets even worse. However if the minimum wage was to increase dramatically as you suggest it does, then we can't afford to put on new apprentices either.
we are banging our heads on the wall here, to be sure. There are too many sides of the picture, and i'm not going to say that IR is going to benefit everyone. I just know that emloyers employ people because they have to...they need you. If you are honestly good at what you do, i can't see there being a problem - although i will admit that this is based entirely on my working situation...but then what do i know, i'm just a dumb tradesman afterall!
