I'd suggest late model second hand stuff, you can pick up really nice almost new gear such as slingshot for under $1000 for a kite and under $400 for a board (rrp for new would be over $2000 for a kite and $900 for a board). There are loads of brands, basically anything thats newish (for safety and ease of use) will get u going so u can make your own mind up on kites and boards.

Size wise it depends on your weight, where you live etc but generally people if only wanting one kite go with around a 12-14m and a board to start of 140cm or so. It all depends on your ability to pick up things quickly and from experience in similar sports.

Make sure u get a lesson or two before you buy and check out the classifield forums here, and ebay etc as well as your local shop and make up your mind whats a good deal. And go out and practise flying and doing the stuff u learnt in the lessons!
