gday all,
i weigh about 60kg and am trying to decide between:

9m 2004 slingshot fuel or
11m 2004 wipika matrix

ive been on my gaastra 10m gspot and prefer this size as it gives me the best wind range for my weight (13 - 25 knots). (Both these kites do not have a 10m which would have been perfect )
just wondering which kite people think is better and whether the 11m matrix would be too big for my fav kite conditions

This is Jess from Airborne,

If you're looking for a 10m and want to stay with a mid-aspect kite as your post suggests you could consider a 10m Airush Flow. The 10 this season, 2004, is a totally different shape from last years 9m. It is still very much a mid aspect kite in it's low end power and smoothness of power delivery but it sits noticeably further forward in the window helping heaps with tacking back upwind and depowering in stronger winds.

It doesn't fly overly fast through the window but it does snap back without delay when you turn it, this gives significantly bigger jumps and hangtime. I was impressed by this, not having expected much of a difference to my 9m.

Being so quick to turn, it also allows you to sine it without getting sore elbows to get the bottom end you're looking for. I reckon it will have a similar wind range to what you're used to with your Gaastra, I'm 63kg and was happy with it from 15kn.

Anyway, might give you another quality kite to consider. Good luck!

im also using the 12m EH freestyle and am super happy with the kite. Real high aspect ratio (6.2) making it real easy to get upwind. Sits real high in the window and flys in winds from 13 - 22 knots for a 75kg person.looks really well made (reinforced around leading edge). Brand new for $900. Also available in 10s. Check it

yeah cheers everyone!
i had a quick look at a 2nd hand EH kite when iwas buying some lines off skip (the guy who had the car boot sale). Ive also heard about best kites (shannon best)...apparently theyre very good but havent seen one for myself.
But alas, too late as I purchased a 11m wipika matrix today. This thing looks bomb proof with some great features so I cant wait to fly it...WHERES THE WIND!?!?

SYTSEM REBOOT

I,m a disributer , I,m a shop, I,m selling this brand, all you f**ks should get of the forums. Not a bad choice Dan, the only issue with may be spare parts down the line, as Wipika' days in are numbered with all the heads of the once strong Kite company leaving in recent months.

i work for a shop, Airborne Kitesurfing, and a national distributor - AUSWIND and have no ethical problem posting on this forum.

The truth is that forums can be a hot pot of disinformation due to posts from inexperienced or biased members.I have read plenty of stuff on here that is not only misleading but is also just plain wrong ! however Its a free world and if you are good and can read between the lines you might just extract the truth out of a query and the conflicting answers you will be supplied with. Its all a bit of sport really...

At Airborne and Auswind we are behind the sport and growing the user base First and then our brands come into the picture from that point onwards. And we stand behind our brands 100% because we are involved in their design and we have incredible aussie talent involved in creating world class product that Australians can be proud to say they are part of. We believe our brands are second to none but will also say that there are some great products out there from our competitors - this only forces everyone to lift their game and deliver superior , more efficient and more robust technology year after year.

If we were not on here posting and guiding people and organising comps (Windjam, Gerro, Rottnest, woodies) and advising on safety and having major input into waksa (this goes for many of the other shops too)and making DVDs featuring awesome local talent so that people overseas can see whats going on here
then do you believe the sport would be where it is today in WA ? We also supply kitesurfing schools nationwide making it super affordable to get the best teaching gear into the hands of instructors and students to ensure that they have an easy road into kitesurfing.Remember it is shops and distributors like these that sponsor our local heroes like Dan Anderson, Ryland, Jake , Theresa etc. making it more possible for them to get to comps , the nationals , overseas.

With a sport like kite surfing it is quite possible to go very wrong in your equipment choice as a beginner - 3.2 2 line foil and 137 wakeboard with bindings anyone ? Seen plenty of these sold through the quokka.

Try and see the big picture when you see a post from a distributor or a shop.

pain don't hurt !

Looks like life for kite retailers is going to get even harder. Best kites got there website running last week and if the reviews on kiteforum.com are anything to go by, these kites could be the business. My flatmate ordered one 2 days ago. 11 metre med aspect with bar and lines cost $824.00 Australian dollars. And they post the kite to youre door free of charge.
I think that for youre fist kite you cant go past a shop because there is a lot of ongoing support and help that the shop will provide. But once you know youre sport i think buying online is going to be the future for all youre gear.
If my mates Best kite is as good as im expecting it to be, i know what im going to be buying in the future.
Best kites are designed by EH Caberet Kites and i believe they are pretty similar.
I do admit i am a sucker for a cheap kite, but i think that Best Kites are a little bit different. They are cheap because they have cut out the retailer and the wholesaler.

Hey mattress man, if you read the first post by Dan the bloke is seeking advice on which kite too choose. A Matrix or Fuel, then a shop jumps on and says "what about our brand". You are insulting the intelligence of the kiting community, if you claim you have their best interests at heart. The post by Jess (who is a lovely girl) proves otherwise.I hope you can see MY point of veiw.

System,

I appreciate you not attacking me personally.

Dan Roberts did specifically state he would prefer a 10m kite, that being the sole reason for 'jumping in and trying to flog a product'. We all know Slingshots are good kites and Wipika have their good products too, it was his size issue that caught my attention.

When I post on sticky issues like this, as Laurie puts it, I do try to keep it within context and as close to the original posters requirements as I can.

Dan, pleased you found your kite, hope you enjoy it!

ha brownee - i notice you thought it best not to mention your china kites at this stage of the thread.

PS - ive seen a lot of bad info from shops as well. But can see the merits for newbies. Best bet for newbies i think is to get down on the beach and talk to at leat 5 diff people that have no sponsorship etc.

The airborne poster did have a point about investing in the sport as shop, but of course its in their own interest..thats how they make money. To sell kites. Not something I personally feel i owe them for. Im happy with less kiters in fact as my beach is pretty crowded. But its all good, more less, plenty of ocean. What a good day today hey.

yes well me and my friends got the bad info first hand by forking out 1600 bucks for a wippi 6.5 2 line that we were told was the perfect kite that u wont get sick of and funny how it was perfect for me that weighs 85kg and still perfect for my friend that weighs 72kg. hmm???
it was too small for me after 1 month.
dont think i need to mention names but i see a lot of them still in the for sale sections everywhere...
search the net and talk on the beach. but remember only believe half of what u hear.

Just for the record...
I did quite a bit of research before purchasing this kite...flew heaps of kites, talked to people (sponsered and not sponsered) and checked out prices (interstate and overseas as well). I flew this kite just on the beach when up at wedge island and really enjoyed it.
I also got a very good deal (from a shop incidently).

seems to be few people using this forum as an advertisng tool...selling kites directly to the consumer (ie. direct from the factory) assuming for a sales fee, and thereby screwing the local retailers... legalities, do these people have abn's to they do all the legal stuff like charge gst, pay import duties etc. and if something goes wrong will they take responsibilitity for the product, do they have insurance etc. I encourage people to support their local stores who hopefully conduct their business in a morally and legally correct manner.

ill support local stores when their prices are in the same ballpark as interstate stores and overseas stores... they plain aren't.

ill also support ppl like brownee@chinakite, kites are rediculously expensive and need to come down some (just look at the prices of good condition second hand gear kicking around!)

Jan, there is one local store who is selling brand new quality kites from $799... If the demand is there for cheaper kites the stores will stock them, if one store is stocking cheaper kites and are selling them... the other stores will compete... ECONOMICS! So why dont the guys selling them direct, sell through the stores? 2 possibile reasons: its not ligite, & cutting out the middle man. I emphasis possible, anyone doing this legally, its a free capitalist world, good luck to you. Anyone doing illegally, karma will prevail, most likely via customs or the tax office!

Killer, sandgroper kites is totally above board, its business number BN09848691,abn 69 079 580 162, Australian owned and managed, includes warranty, and if something goes wrong you actually get the good old fashioned face to face customer service that is only available through a retailer with a reputation to uphold. I would love to tell you who the local retailer is, as well as give you a big write up named "kite review" but hey that would be advertising and as per the forum guidelines I am trying to comply...

Who is entitled to an ABN

Do I need an ABN?
Not everyone is entitled to an ABN.
Companies registered under the Corporations Law and business entities carrying on an enterprise in Australia are entitled to an ABN.
Employees and hobbyists are not entitled to an ABN as they are not carrying on an enterprise.
Self-funded retirees do not need an ABN. They continue to use their tax file number when reporting their annual income to the ATO.

Is the ABN compulsory?
Applying for an ABN is not compulsory. However, if you are required to register for GST, you will need to apply for an ABN as well.
All businesses with an annual turnover of $50, 000 or more must register for GST and will need an ABN to do this. This can be done on the same form. Organisations with a lower annual turnover may choose to register.
If you are not required to register for GST, you can still apply for an ABN.
All non-profit organisations with an annual turnover of $100, 000 or more must register for GST and therefore need an ABN. Also, businesses that need to be endorsed as a gift deductible recipient or an income tax exempt charity or both, require an ABN.

Why might my enterprise need an ABN?
You need an ABN and GST registration in order to claim GST credits for any GST you have paid for goods and/or services you have used in your business. If you are supplying goods or services, you will need to be able to quote an ABN so that others businesses do not withhold tax at the top marginal rate when they pay you.

How does the ABN affect relations between businesses?
Businesses registered for GST are required to issue tax invoices that quote their ABN. Under pay as you go taxation, businesses receiving an invoice are required to withhold tax from their payments for goods and services if an ABN is not quoted.

this is a quote taken from the ATO......

Andrew to answer your question no i do not have an ABN as i am not required to. What chinakites sell's is recreational sports good for personel use, under ATO rulings the purchaser is not required info about an ABN as he/she cannot gain anything from it. Also small business's under $50,000 do not require an ABN also. To add to this we do not not require any services from any company within australia for GST purposes and we also do not import any goods into the country as we sell directly out of china, purchaser pays for there own importing as clearly stated on the web site.
