For eight long years I have trying unsuccessfully to do a back roll. I say again - EIGHT YEARS. For most people the easiest trick there is. But I have been convinced I suffer roll-dyslexia. My brain has just not been able to include the extra dimension in what I'm doing out there.

I would prepare to do a roll, then flail about madly looking a little bit like a fish on a hook, then splash in any number of amusing positions.

It had reached the point where I would think about trying to do a roll and fall over. I was resigned to a life of permanent non-rolling. Perhaps I needed a sports psychologist. Perhaps I should just take up lawn-bowls instead.

The things I have tried:
Magazines
Videos
Reading every forum post I can find
Stringing up a bar and lines from the veranda
Going out and body-slamming over-and-over again.

I even booked remedial lessons (but never attended as got a season ending injury before it happened)

Well, at the duck's nuts here in Tassie, an Easter miracle occured.

It finally clicked! Both tacks. I was rolling so much I was getting dizzy

I'm so happy - I'm not dyslexic after all.

So to all people who have been struggling for several months now with a roll, just think in 2018 you too may finally master it.

Yes, I have been truly lame for a long time now - and have quite happily acknowledged it. But that is all behind me now. In eight more years I'm sure I shall master my next trick!

I think your balls might have been slowing your rotation,,,,maybe?

Or maybe they have been causing you to gather too much momentum and causing you to over rotate

lol thanks Brady for boosting my confidence!
Been riding for 1,5 years and thought I would be lame because I am still chickening out on kiteloops (Got small kiteloop backrolls working though)

Next step for you could be front rolls - you could practice them without board first, a big kite makes it easier and safer as well. Pop off vertically, rotate your head first and don't lean on the bar too much, otherwise you could have some bad crashes.

Keep rollin' bro..

Which, when I used to ride a spin tip, I found WAY easier than back rolls-bit of a hangover from doing forward loops from the poley days-long, long ago.

nice work big balls

funny, today, first time, landed four of the barstards in a row, found that if i throw it with only one hand on the bar(the other squeezing my nuts) and a third to half way through the rotation pull my hand off i mean put my hand back on the bar, **** loads easier.

Still struggle a bit with getting the kite in the right spot to ride away nicely

Great feeling, i am right with ya good luck am definately looking fwd(dreaming) about front rolls now

Hey Brady,
Man - you're famous! rocked up to a beach party in QLD and the conversation starts with "..What about that guy from Tassie who got a backroll after 8 years"!

That's awesome!! Always sad to miss a Ducks event ...looking forward to hearing the stories.... and to seeing you smash some moves at the next one!!,

Hi Brady,
Thanks for making me feel not so bad- almost 4 years now and I still cant do a backroll consistantly!
Railies, downlooping carves, boosts, waves- all good. Backrolls, about 1 in 50 chance to land it, otherwise many messy unco upsidedown backwards inside out finishes.

Same as you, have tried everything you have with minimal success, just that 3rd dimension of the whole rotation thing has a weird affect on my brain....

Have to get back to Shark Bay again to work on them!

Hi Lisa

I guess it's good to be famous for something. And I've never been ashamed to admit my incompetence.

Ducks was good. Fantastic surf at Marrawah on Good Friday. Saturday not a breath of wind so did the family thing. And Sunday a nice 15 nor easter clean swell at Peggs. Didn't have a leave pass for the Monday, so don't know how that went

Irony is you are anything but incompetent in the water! – I’ve seen you rip on some pretty decent waves my friend!

Good to hear the wind and waves were on for your guys. Mmmmm, Marrawah
Qld week was good too, great crew (cheers if any are reading) and conditions. The guys made sure we weren’t too homesick..down to the finer details.... like a random campfire streaker....heck...there was even a streaker on one of the downwinders..ha ha!! .
