hey
i know a lot of questions have been asked about bali but havent really found the info that i wanted... so hopefully someone could give me a few pointers!
I am heading to Bali early July with a few mates. Plan to bring surfboard, 122 twin tip, 11m and underground surf/kiteboard. Staying in Kuta but would like to do a trip to Lombok and/or Sumbawa as well as any surf location within 2 hours of Kuta.
Anyone got an idea on good spots?? Ive heard that the wind direction is mainly easterly so maybe sanur?? Even better! Anyone know where those guys in spacemonkeys II rode?!?! Told once but forgot the name...Lakey? Not sure..
Also, Im after a double board bag that could carry the boards and kite. Any suggestions on brands, prices?
I tried that bali kitesurfing site but the info on wind strength in the wet and dry seasons seem contradict.
Any help would be much appreciated
Cheers
Dan

Hey Kiterdan,

you'll need a bigger kite than an 11m. I would take a 16 or 18 which will get you going if you plan on riding a twin tip. A 12 or 14 will be OK if large twinny or 11-12 for a surfboard.

Sanur gets lightish winds but can be OK up to 15-18 knots in most cases. It is heavily tide effected as when the tide is out, there is nothing but coral and urchins. High tide is OK.

KuDeTa can be kited not far from Legian in the arvies and doesn't matter about tide. The coast around Chang Gu is also good, just pick the spots which are working when you get there.

The place in SM2 is Sumbawa. There are a few other places around the joint but you will need to meet up with the local kiters for more assistance in finding them.

I took a 12 and 9 and a 6'6" surfboard and I was OK. In fact did better than my friends on their twin tips and 18's.

Hook up with Mario at the Blue Oasis club on Sanur Beach and he'll guide you right. Expect more surfing than kiting and you wont be disappointed.

Good luck.

Ciao Dan,
I'm from the Bali web site, if you need more details info you can contact me.
July you have a 60-40% probs. of kiteable wind but with a 16 meter at least if you are 70 kilos.
More you travel east stronger is the wind (Lombok, Sumbawa, Sumba etc)
Lakey is a different subject as the wind is thermal (from South) and start to work only when the trades loose some strenght, therefore in August... Before that the wind is of shore.

Thanks heaps for that...much appreciated!
Windwise; im only a light weight and get planing and just staying upwind in around 14-15 knots with the 11m. Im selling the 16 to get enough money to buy the underground!! From your reply kitehard, i think i should be alright...
Once again, cheers!
Anyone else got any spots that may be worth a trip??

Ciao again Dan,
Lombok is totally inexplored till now.. rumors say that there is more wind then Bali on the south coast... You can see a series of aerial images on my site, but I didn't had a chance to visit there yet during the right season.
Sumba looks spectacular, I'm elaving to Europe in 2 weeks and will be back on end of July when I'm going to explore from Roti to Sumba..
I will send a post for sure, if you are an explorer, just check better the site of the others islands, all the tips to fidn the spots are there, after studing and talking with local.
I still think that with the 11 meter you will be just on the minimum side in Bali, but maybe with the UG surfstyle you may be ok.
Any way the surf will be UP and you will not get bored for sure.
I also have the 5,8 Surf UG coming for myself!
Bye Jankie

Hey Kiterdan,

I tend to agree with Jankie, you will probably need more than an 11. Jankie knows Bali better than most for kiting and his information is spot on.

What you also need to remember is that tropical island breeze does not have the grunt than cooler higer latitude winds have. Ie 15 knots of Perth wind is equal to about 18 knots of Bali wind.

If you can get a 13 or 14 you'd be better off. Bali is generally a lighter wind place, especially within an hour or so of Kuta.

Hey Jankie, you need to put your website address in the thread so we can come visit.

Cheers lads

I did the Roti-Bali trip about 7 years or so ago, wasnt kiting but surfing.
Roti is great very cool place, the main break is an awesome left hander, the wind if i remember came in every arvo as it would blow the waves out. there is a hugely strong rip that runs parrallel to the beach when the tide is in and kiting would probably be a pain. I think there was another beach round the corner that could have been good.

Sumba is a wild place, take some time out of the kiting/surfing just to have a look around. take plenty of "beetle nut" wherever you go the locals love it. Visiting villages is just the thing to do, take pens, pencils balls etc for the kids. South coast a place called Tarimbaing, real fast barraling right hander when it gets going. Very shallow, very powerful, very beautiful. Watch for sharks saw a few around here only little ones here though. Wind was in again every afternoon, as i remember having to get up early for surfing. Further out on the east coast is a place called Peno or Puno something like that. There are awesome waves, lefts and rights, beaches and a rivermouth here. Its famous for the market on the weekends there. Would be great in fact perfect for kiting....if the wind came in ....cant remember what the wind was like when i was there...good surf though and good fishing...take a rod.

Sumbawa, all the hype is true but its on this island that the crowds start to appear, go south coast, follow the surfers. Have a look around as well,

Lombok, stay in kuta on the south coast, nothing like its counterpart in bali. Dont know about the winds, though i seem to remember it was always windy as the surf was regulary blown out by early afternoon.

Have got heaps more info about travelling the other side of Roti, but dont want to put it here as i'll take up pages and pages.
Come to the Melville do on 26th May, 7pm, Legends Pub, hislop Rd, Attadale and i'll talk your head off about it. If you let me know in advance i'll bring a few photos to get you going.

I think one of the most important things here is dont get too caught up in the kiting/surfing thing stop and have a look around, the people are pretty cool, and if you go off the beaten track people are really curious about you and you can have some amazing experiences that you will probably never have again.

Ahhhh travel good for the soul.

went to bali last year. june 28- july 10. surfs goes off. i didnt even take my kite gear because of the reports i heard and i thought i dont want to carry a heap of gear around for nuffin. sanur is close and is onshore all day everyday that time off year. but dont expect it to get over 15knts if ya lucky. 10-12knts consitantly . so i just surfed . but if that sort of wind gets you moving go for it. you will definately need a bigger kite. id say 13 or bigger. id take a 17 or bigger. but i wouldnt even bother myself. sumbawa is suppose to be sick. lakey pipe and those sorts of places go off (space monkeys 2) hope you get better wind than we did dan.
