kiter or surfer?

Pick an area you want to stay in and I'll give you the low down. I worked there for 12months (also kited)
If your a surfer then uluwatu side.
If your a kiter then sanur side.
I'm your a cheeseball then kuta side.

Just look out for the 'wanita nakal'.....!

You have plenty of options, but you are not likely to find much info on the 'cheap shacks' online.

I stayed in Dreamland (not the best surf, but it is short paddle to Balangan and not so far from Bingin, Uluwatu + more) for about 3 bucks a night. But cheap ones are everywhere. Bingin, Balanagan, Uluwatu (you pay more here). You just rock up and look around to find the place you like best.

Your best bet, especially if you are going for both kiting and surfing, is to hire a little scooter. You can get to about 10 different breaks from Dreamland/Bingin in about 15 minutes on one of those. If you get if for more than 10 days, it is only a few bucks a day. You get a rack for you board, put your kite on your back and away you go. Just bring some small change to bribe the police and wear a helmet.

If your just after general accomadation, transport information, your best bet is to post on the lonely planet thorn tree forum.

April is too early for wind....
Cheaper accommodations are around Kuta but not on the Beach..
Balian could be a good choice but not sure about prices there!
Also on the Bukit for surfing and cheap places but then you are far from everything else.
I would say Canggu for Surf and maybe Kite (if you get lucky) and closer to some evening action.
NOt sure about places there but there are few new surf camps.

I was there last year in July. Take a big kite. The flat water in the lagoon at Sanur is awesome to kite on, and if the wind picks up you can head out to the breaks beyond the reef. You can also hire gear on the beach at Sanur.

From what i saw Canggu would be the best bet for both, stayed with a mate who lives there and there are a few cheap places to stay, you are not going in peak times so just rock up at a home stay and there should be a room. Get a scooter for a few days (We hired a car for AUD10 per day) and there are plenty of breaks up and down that stretch of coast.
Had a couple of good surfs at Canggu and there was one day when the wind absolutely ripped in, but I did not have my gear and you cannot hire there, so I had to settle for watching guys rip it up in awesome swell and wind .

The waves on shore at Kuta/Legian are awful, the ones worth surfing are offshore.

Listen to Jankie. BALIAN is good as is Jankies advice, Motorbikes are 50,000rp a day to hire. (8000rp is 1 dollar au) If you dont have a licence or helmet then it's going to sting you 50,000 in a fine/bribe. Have this ready in a pocket and don't show your wallet full of cash as he will want it all straight up. If there is and doubt that the policeman wont take the 50k, then double it just to get the hell outta there. This should be done within the first 2 mins!! Take my advice!!! The main area for tourists to get done for a bribe is at the main roundabout heading into kuta. They will sit there and just wait for a westerner to head past then before you know it they are onto you like a flash. Also along the beach at kuta is another spot they will get you. More advice is to book accom here is aust online for 1 or 2 nights which is pretty nice. Then you hire your motorbike and have a look around and find your own sweet place by asking around and exploring.

Bali is an interesting place. Go see Jankie and eat at his italian place in sanur. There he has accom also and if you dont mind staying in sanur then you will kite also if the wind is in. Bali wind is very frustrating.. (or the lack of!) Canggu might be the better option.

Dont drink arak. Dont bang ho's and when a taxi driver claps his hands at you and gestures just say.. Tidak mau (or pronounced tidda mau) Means ' I dont want' in english!

(hi jankie also.. Jay here)

Statistics in the weathers web site are not working.
The wind reading at the airport is totally off... It show 8 knots in Easterly when in reality it could be 16 knots...
JUst check the statistic in my web site... I have been windsurfing/kitesurfing in Bali since 1997...

85 kilos..... 12m and big surfboard OR 14m and TT.
If you loose few KG before coming it would be better....

11m and TT and you watch from the beach 90% of days!

Because there a a plethera of old seedy disease ridden 60 year old ex pats in bali that pay $$$ to bang ho's. I mean really nasty paedo types. No these ho's dont really care and will do whatever you like. So if you want sloppy seconds and a strong chance of picking up a STD then feel free to bang as many as u like. Also if you think the idea oh having a 'ho' squat in front of you in the shower and wash her fanny with her hand before you do her sounds a little off putting then it probably is. My mate simon has been doing them for years and just last month has vowed never to go there again. I eventually got it out of him that he caught a nasty hitch hiker and cant shake it off! I told him to concentrate on euro birds but he has yellow fever! lol

hope this make it more clear now!

sanur or kuta.. Mostly sanur. 200,000rp is the going rate and before you ask, yes I have been into an establishment with a mate who does them quite a bit. However if you had seen what I saw you would have done a runner with your tail between you legs like I did. Dirty scummy places and the chicks are not exactly pretty!

I would stay clear and thats the truth!

And no i didnt do one.. thanks for asking.

Hey mate. If you are wanting to kite and also surf i wouldnt be going to bali.
head to sumbawa. i did a two month kite and surf trip last year across the winter months and fluck me, sumbawa is the pick of all the indo islands for good wind and waves.

you become soooo spoilt that 15knots cross shore in nice reef breaking waves is not good enough. well i wish i was there now.

pm me for any info.
