Hey Duke,

I have been to GC once to kitesurf and 1 good place I know are Broadwaters near SeaWorld but on the other side of the water(Pacific Fair side..if that makes sense). Its totally flat there and is good to learn in. Also Im told that all of the beaches along the GC are OK to kitesurf in, just stay away from the flags, Surfers and swimmers. Hope this helps, also Psylor is a nice bloke and is a local there and is good for any info on the area. Search the forums and PM him.
All the best and Goodluck!!!

Duke, find 'Sheerwater Esp' at Runaway Bay. Go there with smiles and beers on a windy southerly or northerly and youll fit in.

I first started at the train, across from sea world, it's a shocker of a spot for a total beginner unless you have a boat (which I didn't) to get across to the sandbar. Otherwise it's a tiny beach, crowded, jet skis, houseboats and the **** the local operators allegedly pump out, a bloody ski jump in the firing line, and plenty of navigation markers.

Shearwater was much more better.

Yeah that lovely portrait i gave u poor reli, that was me before i started kiting. So now i've lost a heap of weight, now i only weigh about 68kg (thats me in the yellow, btw) I've had every tattoo removed and have grown my hair long. I also had my man boobs reduced.
I was sick of the embarrassment of wearing womans bra's & having to explain to people why its not a fetish & that i need them for the support. So i guess im not really a good breast model for Breast kites anymore.

stradbroke island used to be one long island until a ship was grounded around the early 1900's and the salvagers decided to blast a clear passage with dynamite for it's release.the island became north and south stradbroke with jumpinpin bar arising from their actions. it's a really remote kitesurfing and windsurfing and fishing spot, but only 40 mins by boat from the gold coast. respect it.we love it!don't commercialise it.

Originally i believe that Moreton island was also joined to North Straddie which was joined to South straddie which joined the Southport spit (all 3 islands joined up to the mainland)
North Straddie has been 'occupied' for the last 10,000 odd years by the aboriginals. Yet look how much white man has changed it in the last 200.

"In the spring of 1898 North and South Stradbroke Islands were connected by a narrow bridge of land which was less than 40 metres wide."

"On 3 September 1894, the Scottish barque "Cambus Wallace" whilst carrying a cargo of explosives from Glasgow to Brisbane ran aground and sunk only 200 metres offshore directly adjacent to this narrow bridge. The Government of the day decided that in the interests of safety for the local fishing industry to detonate the cargo so as to prevent any of it breaking loose and damaging fishing crafts. It was this detonation, and weakening of the sands which eventually led to the separation of Stradbroke Island into two - North and South, during the next major storm in 1898."

Todays history lesson is bought to you by Dr. Charles Roe

settle fellas The Pin aint what you make it out to be!!!

Picture this -

when you stay up there for several days on da boat sure you drink heaps, sure you smoke some big cubans, sure you can ride in any wind direction, sure you can sit on the back deck watchin the sunset while catchin a fish, sure there are hot women sunbakin on there 50ft crisers, sure there are camp fires and guys being stupid. BUT nothings worse than 6hrs kiting then having to get in the tinny and pull up a dozen crab pots to then come back and cook for '2 frigin hours'.

See it's not all good!!!

Hey Psylor - The picks are good. The wind was certainly howling, check out the sand blowing.

Yep I agree with Paulio.

Dario and I were up there with some company on my Cruiser for four days. Its a real pain.

We had to got up early each day and wakeboard on the super smooth water behind one of my jetkis until there was a very slight chop at about 10am. Then we went back to the cruiser and had morning tea on the sundeck.

As the water had a slight chop on it by then we had to water ski until about 12 O'clock and then stop for lunch.

After lunch the wind would be up so we would have to kite until about 6pm and then head back to the boat for a barbecue and some card games with the company.

Geeeez we were tired after four days of that torture. We are heading back for another week of it soon ..... Damn !!!!

Pics of the launching platform are at:
