hey i've got a naish raven 12m 06. and an 07/08 fly 1 132cm board. i'm 87kg

do you think i would progress faster with a new board or a new kite. was thinking about getting a nobile 888 vs saving for longer and getting a naish torch 08.

i spend more time on flat water but am looking to get into the surf a bit more as well.
cheers

would a nobile 133*41 be big enough. its a fair bit wider then mine and heaps lighter???
what makes you say a bigger board rather then just a better board???
thanks

i would save and get the torch it is a pure c-kite wich would be great to unhook and progress on and ur board is fine.

i was under the impression that my naish raven was a pure c-kite too. so could start unhooking on it anyway.

both are fine, shouldnt need a new kite or a new board, doubt changing gear would make you improve signifigantly faster.

Raven is a more high AR hooked in jumping kite than a unhooked freestyling kite. but yes it is still possible to unhook on it.

maybe save up and buy a smaller or larger kite fr stronger or lighter winds ( i dont know what your location conditions are like)

or perhaps get a board around 134 - 136 x 39 - 42 to get up and planing earlier.

I should have said flatter as well .What is a better board anyway .That board might help why not go 138/140 x 42/45 .Better still try before you buy

i thought that the bigger boards were harder to ride when the wind was up heaps. is this the case?
i was told that a harder board and wider would be better for pop and riding just harder on the knees and would tend to bite in when wave riding.

yes unless you ride bindings then a 138 - 140 is perfect.

go something 132 - 136

the FLY132 is a fantastic board though thats only for flat water.. in the surf u might find you need something with a bit more rocker.. A Nobil isnt your best bet IMO. Id look at a CAB caliber for a board that will excell at both flat water and waves.

that actually looks like a pretty cool board, i think they hire them out for $30 at goodtimes to try out too. they're not cheap though if my memory serves me correctly.

they've got a few sizes around where charldv said to look too.
133 X 41
136 X 42
edit: 136 X 42 $950 vs $800 for the nobile

Never said they were cheap... but $150 extra for a better suited board isnt all that much. + you get the benefits of the Sync bindings/straps/whatever you want to call them. id go with the 136 given your situation.

yeah fair enough, the bindings do look pretty awesome. do you know how the customs 07-08 compare to the caliber???

132 is a small board if you want to get up and going, just depends what level your riding at, go to a shop and have a chat with the staff, the industry is only small people arn't going to screw you over, its not all about looks either, noble boards look good and they have lot's of add's in magazines, but their also very thin construction like the north boards which can crack easily. just get out on the water more. if you really feel like you've gotta but something have a look for a bigger cheap board here, then sell it off when your done. dont bother with wasting money on bindings until you can unhook..

$800 for a nobile, you can get a good second hand kite for that much too..

peace

I ride a 07/08 Custom and i have ridden the caliber. The custom needs to be very powered to get a good upwind tack. It pops massive and is smooth on the landings. The caliber however has a pretty solid upwind ability and stilll has a killer pop in it. It doesnt have as much rocker in ti so it moves allot faster. the only reason I went for the custom insted of the caliber becasue it doubles as my wakeboard

I'm still learning mate, just did my first back roll but still can't land them consistantly. the size of the board only seems to be an issue in light stuff but i still find a marked difference when i compare it to other boards even in heavy stuff

the nobile 666 boards are great alround boards in surf chop or flat and great freestyle boards + have a 3yr waranty. the cab boards ride well powered up and have the awsome sinc bindings which keep the board on your feet no matter what which will give you a better chance of landing tricks. but dont go up wind as well as some boards when its a bit lite but they ride great. ss have 3 great boards the lunacy for flat, misfit for everything else and the sx for mor freeride this years ss boards have the frt core which take a lot of the landing load and makes the board unbreakable.

There are a lot of other great boards out there you just need to look at what style of riding you are doing and what you want to do in the future.

as far as progressing faster what are you having trouble with as a new kite would depower more and have all the mod cons that could help your confidence in doing your next trick as when you crash it would depower and not punish you as much also the relaunch would be better which helps wit learning to unhook as it is so easy to relaunch. the new kites pop better eg the bandit dos when you jump of a piece of chop you feel the kite just rip you up when it is still parked at 45.

so if you dont have any real dramas with your board eg you can ride up wind load and pop and edge when well powered up grab a new kite as they get so much better every year and you wont look back + you will get more range out of it as a lot of riders are getting a one kite quiver this year.

i initially was just going to get a new kite until i was watching a couple of blokes on a raven and torch similar in era to mine. they were doing so many insane unhooked tricks that i figured my kite would be capable of more then i would be for at least another season. i bought a 11m new starkite. and found that the depower on that helped me to progress heaps faster in the gusty winter weather but now it feels so slow that i'm going to sell it and keep the old kite, and possible buy a new smaller kite or a new bigger board.

it's sounding like i may just have to get out there and try some new kites and boards and go from there.
thanks for the input
