Few people have managed broken ribs before.. Something I was made aware of before getting into kite surfing. Heard ex local kiter (ox) broke one...

Had a fall from over Swung my kite on a high jump and landed on my side about 10 days ago - didn’t think much of it apart from feeling out of breath and a bit "weird".. But little pain at the time, but last sesh I had yesterday the pains increasingly getting worse... breathing in and shoulder rotations seem to be the main sore points. Can’t feel though anything loose or cracked or tender to touch - mosty around the chest, lats and shoulder area.... I thought it might be just a stretched or pulled muscle in my shoulder (ribs don’t go that high do they?)

Anyhow anyone out there had similar symptoms... saves me a trip to the quack. If you have had a broken rib before were you able to still kite (pains not yet their to stop me... but its getting pretty close to my threshold )

Someone please help this hydrocondriac...

Get a mate to push firmly on your sternum (breast bone) and if this produces a SHARP pain on the side of your rib cage, then yes you probably have broken a rib.
It is very unlikely at this late stage to cause any problems like puncturing your lung (it is probably not even out of alignment if you are still just wondering if it's broken).
No you don't need to see your Dr, the treatment is symptomatic ......
So yes you can sail .... take some nurofen before going out.
Oh, and don't worry if it takes ages to settle, that's just the way the cookie crumbles.

I've cracked a rib, very painful to cough or laugh, let alone rolling over in bed. Sounds like similar symptoms.

If you go to the doctor, they might give you an X-ray or they might not, either way there's nothing they can do about it apart from letting it heal all by itself.

If it's too painful to kite, don't. If it's bearable, then go out but be careful, you don't want to actually break it, it's a lot weaker at the moment...

hey cwamit,

I did something to one of my ribs in carins at kite week. Seriously sore for about 1 month and couldn't kite until 2 weeks later. Even then it was painful with my harness on.
When i rolled over in bed it would click in and out of place, hard to breath aswell.
I didn't bother going to a doctor as they can't do anything for ribs anyway. I just ate heaps of pain killers of a week.

All good now about 6 months on, but still if i land in the same position hard then i can feel it.

Hope u feel better soon.

Angie

Cwamit, your ribs are there to protect you fragile internals, like your lungs.
Go see a Doc, otherwise continual use or another bad landing may end up with a crack developing into a sharp rib bone into you lung area.
Other than that, there are couple of other area's that can have same feeling, one is the material between ribs that can get torn, Pace bowlers in cricket get it from the whip action in bowling, other is you have pinched a nerve in your back area and its inflamed.
But go see a Doc.... you wont regret it!!

Cwamit,
If you had broken or cracked ribs, you would know!!! Painful to breath and move, killer to cough, and fkn uncomfortable to sleep/roll over....basically one of the most annoying injuries....to top it off, it takes forever to heal...6-8 weeks easy.
You can pop the ribs out of the cartlidge as well...however feels just like you broke them. If you can kite, let alone sleep/cough etc..you might have just bruised them, or pulled a muscle, pinched nerve, etc. You could see a doc ...but there is bugger all they can do... Try compression bandages, voltaren cream, and your choice of painkiller..If you could stand it...I would spend the $$ and go get a sports massage or physio... Do what you think is best!!
anyway my 2cents

sore lat on one side some rotations, but not all hurt, certain parts of situps hurt? and sore point on back. My brother (physio)diagnosed me with either a muscle torn off vertebrate ore pulled muscle between ribs, excellent masseuse convinced me it was the muscle between ribs ,thought i was ok had a long session and felt very sore nxt day after that had 4 wks not kiting, then went for a surf (no kite) all gd again! Like others have said not much u can do but rest, but depending on how sore u should get someone to lk at it

oh yeah, these r very small muscles that take a while to heal and given where they r, r generally hard to pull, but might be a common one for kiters?

Thanks for info people.. sounds more of a sore muscle issue (thanks f&*K) seems general consensus is skip the doc as little can be done apart from taking drugs................ .................................. suppose just keep at it till I cant kite even with one arm - think monthy python and the holy grail sword fight scene!

Ribs - my experiences:

Recent episode - Mystic Warrior Waist - the H Frame internal battens line up perfectly with the fractures - Broke three about a month ago getting slammed mid-loop. Thought the harness was great till then - the force of the stack pulled it up my chest.
The initial pain was bad - but more of a winded feeling. A few days later went to the hospital and they thought they were fine from the Xray, but thought the ultrasound showed a torn liver, so they ambulanced me to a private hospital where they gave me another Xray that showed the 3 broken ones - liver was fine after more tests though stopped them before the 'nuclear test' cost me a fortune...then broke another a fortnight later going for a gentle surf, broke on the front of my chest which must have been cracked from before.

Earlier episode - About a year and a half ago - Dakine Fusion - had the lower straps loose and the bar point came up when I crashed on another loop attempt and cracked my ribs - this did less damage though hurt more.

Lessons learnt: Think about what the harness could do to you, and protect yourself so it doesn't. Go easy with loops, try and put your hands towards the center of the bar. Kiteboarding can change your life in many ways, most good though not all. The equipment that you might think is the best, might in a second work you so bad that it kills!

Broke 2 ribs last season with a new harness, had to ride the rest of the season with a seaty and eventually had just as much pain with a seat harness with the groin tendons. Every harness is different, Im now using a prolimit pure girl harness as the bar sits lower than anything i've tried. If a harness(or bar) when pulled vertical touches your ribs it not for you. If you're determined to kite the rest of the season I'd suggest a seat for now and then do your research.
A broken rib heals itself and compression on the injured site will not help. Ribs can be broken, fractures or an intercostal muscle can be pulled when kiting. if your gonna see a doc make sure he/she has a dip. in sports med. otherwise its the blind leading the blind.
