Depends when you go to Cairns, its starting to get into jellyfish season. You may want to look at Perth as an alternative.

A couple of us went to Cairns back in august, stayed 1 night in Cairns then hired a house on the beach out at yorkies knob and kited nearly every day, walked across the road pumped up. The locals were a bit cool to start with but soon warmed up and we had a great time time...went up to port Douglas one day but the wind died so back to yorkies for a late session. Don't know about wind conditions in May but definetly hire something at yorkies. When we drove up to Port there was a heap of nice Bays to kite, Green island is good (good for snokling as well)but unfortunitly the tide was wrong for our trip. Lizard is also a good destination for both Kite and Snorkeling. Good kite shop in yorkies open to late at night with really helpful friendly crew in there. There is a guided 3 or 4 day kitesurfing trip up through the rainforest to some Aborigonal lands we were told that it is the ultimate kite surf trip. They say it has ...perfect bays and garanteed wind and good food ... If you do nothing else you should probibly do this trip. We are planning to go back and do this trip next year.

Friend did that trip up north and really enjoyed it, but Maui... - kiting per $ how could you ever get more in June July. Met a windsurfer that remembered very few days with no wind in these months for last 20 years...! (he had been every year during these months.

You might consider Egypt. Plenty of places to kite. I kited at Sa****a (July) where wind came in like clockwork every day for about 3- 4 hours. Did some snorkelling trips out from there as well. Not sure about Ras Sudr but around the southern tip of the Sinai Peninsula there is what is considered some of the best diving/snorkelling in the world in the Marine Reserve. Accomodation around those areas can be a bit pricey but given the $AU against the $US at the moment it probably wouldn't be much worse than accomodation in Hawaii.

**Edit**

I have no idea why it censored the town I was referring to. It is S a f a g a.

Cairns has had a really good run considering it is October. Our season is usually over by now with the odd high pressure coming through giving us only one or two days of wind. It has literally blown everyday between 15 and up to 30 knots this month, with most of the wind around 20 plus. One of the best ends to our season I think I have experienced.

However, the wind normally is light NE and humid around the 10 knot mark up until around March. Don't be disappointed if you come up here and that is what you experience.

Hey mate you shld definetly try NQ for a kiting experience.

From Townsville to Lizard Island.

You could do:
Alva, Townsville, Congall, Lucinda, Yorkeys Knob, Port Douglas, Cooktown, Cape Flattery, LIZARD ISLAND (you can fly up with us, we will do heaps of trips next year) as soon as wind kicks in March!!

Might be good option to Hawaii.
