Last week a few surfers out off first point at Moffs were rounded up by a decent size Hammer Head shark, every time they tried to get in on the rocks it would round them up and cut them off! It did this for quite a while. They ended up deciding to rush the shark all at once on a wave and washed themselfs up on the coffe rock. Apperently Hammer Heads hunt in packs.

I bet at least one of them wouldnt have made it if it was this big fella!

That is massive. i didn't know they grew that big. I think there in the top 5 of the shark man eaters

Rushing at sharks that size isn't the smartest move.

Did the killer of the shark get in trouble? A few months ago a massive bull shark was killed in Noosa River and the fisherman almost got locked up. Fair enough - you don't walk round Africa and shoot the big cats, why should it be ok to kill the big fish.

I remember reading somewhere that there has never been a recorded death from a hammerhead. Infact I think that hammerheads are comparitivly passive compared to the likes of bulls/whalers/tigers/blues. I wouldn't like to test that theory on the one above!

I really have no idea but I was under the impression that only Great Whites are protected.

Caught by set long line deep sea. The fisherman are based out of evans head; but it was hooked straight off the cape at Byron Bay.
It's not illegal to catch sharks.. Queensland govt still sets shark nets to gill trap. It is illegal to fin sharks. Sad to see this big fella hang though
Protected sharks in NSW are Grey nurse, Whites, Hebrst, & Green sawfish shark.

A hammerhead killed a guy up at Osprey reef a few years back. They can be really aggressive if there is blood in the water. They have the most developed olfactory senses of any shark and are a particular danger to spear fisherman, like the guy at Osprey found out.

Thats one big fish.

a bit off topic but does anyone know if banjo sharks are good to eat? I caught a few last time i went fishing but was told they were not that good so we released them.

There are plenty around at the moment......but unfortunately ......

They are not that great to eat........... I would imagine that if you covered it with enough wasabi or similar it may be alright.
I find it to be a bit tough and chewy and for fish thats not too good.

Banjo sharks are however great for frightening those who dont know what they are, Pick on up by the tail and tell every one it is a sting ray ( do you best Steve Irwin.... crikey impression ) as you move your legs around as if to dodge the barb then offer others to touch it ..... no one will come forward.

Stick to the Flathead a very very underrated eating fish.
