Hey guys(and gals),
i was hosing down my kite and was having a hell of a time keeping hold of it in the wind . i string the kite between 2 trees and hose off all the salt and sand...but as it doesn't stop blowing here, i was getting worried about damage to the kite. i tried putting it on the ground but it just gets dirtier and doesnt dry to well.

i was wondering what other methods people use to clean up their gear ??

Dont bother washing your kite down - freshwater is far worse than saltwater for breeding mildew if its packed away wet. Just leave the kite to dry, but wash off all the other stuff, particulalry your wettie, bar/line and harness, that'll keep them good for ages.

wash the sand off your feet and the salt off your skin and your right for another session. If your kites wet and your worried about packing it up dry, fly it arond to dry it.

blow it up like ur going to go out for a session, and put it down facing into the wind, then wash it and let dry- dont pack it up wet... the more wind , the quicker it'll dry.

Letting a kite dry after it has been in saltwater and letting it dry will slowly distroy your kite. Salt crystals form in between the stiching and these act like little knives. I peg mine up around a hills hoist with leading edge up and give it a quick wash with hose or a bucket of water.
Packing any wet kite can be a bad thing with things like colour bleeding or mold, only fresh water gives ya mold.
But when it all comes down to it the kite will only last a few seasons for most anyway.

I have never washed my kite and look how it is now, o wait now i see the problem nah seriously washing it every session might give you an extra couple of hours on the water in the long run before its all over but if you ask me after a long hard sesh I can hardly be bothered packing up let alone washing it down, if you can be bothered go for it but do you seriously think it makes that much difference. Crashing it or leaving it flapping of the beach is much worse for your kite IMO than leaving it in a buckt of salt water all year

Baggsy,

My opinion is that exposing your kite to UV's to dry it or letting it flapping in the wind
are worst than keeping it wet from saltwater.... Also, if you kite a lot, you'll spend your life washing it!

I haven't washed a kite for three years; (edit: I do wash it at the end of the season)
I do not leave it unnecessarily in the sun;
I do not leave it unnecessarily in the wind...

My kites are still living and flying...

However, I might be wrong and my kites could just be very strong!

Those commercial dryers at the laundromat sure keept the mould away, set it on low and your wont even have to iron it.

thanx every one for your opinions... as i live on a beach of mainly wet sand.... and at the moment coral spawn every where ..it is a must to wash the stinking ocean out of it.
i likt the ironing option to make it crispier...
