IT manager avoids the jams by kite-surfing to work
Last updated at 18:28pm on 16th May 2007

Sailing past traffic jams is every commuter's dream but David Grimes does that almost every day - literally.

The 37-year-old IT manager puts on a wetsuit each morning and kitesurfs to his office in Brighton.

He lives in a beach house along the coast west of the city in Shoreham, West Sussex, and the trip to the shore nearest his office takes about 30 minutes. ...

He must start work late. When I lived in Shoreham the wind didn't usually blow until about 3pm.

Alright for some I suppose

I'll bet my left nut he doesn't kite to work in winter.

'F#*k the carbon emmisions' he says.

Sun don't rise till 8 and gone by 4.

Need about 10mm of wetty and i'm talking gloves and **** for your head too. And thats just to rig up.

Plenty of wind though.

i lived on the seafront at Brighton for 2 years and in winter it used to blow 30 knots plus 24/7, sometimes up to 50knots (so hard my bed in our 5th floor flat would roll around when the building moved)

The few brave souls that kited those winds used sub 4m kites (like the sort you think are only made as displays for really small kite shops to hang from the roof). 'Poor bastards' i used to think.

Good skills tho Geeza, keep it up.

jeez he looks heaps older than 37

maybe kitesurfing is bad for your hair, cause he's losing a lot of it, and the little that remains is now white

I used to live and kite there.
no way does he do it most days.....
If you are lucky you get kitable wind along that shoreline - once or twice a week.....
Mind you thats winter and summer....
But in Winter its dark until 7:30am and then dark again by 5....

oh and did you see the colour of the water...poo brown.
